Today, I learned how to pronounce GIF GRAMMAR GUY Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt I understand if you’re not on Reddit; after all, it’s quite the opposite of a local newspaper. However, the online community of Reddit contains groups for virtually any interest, as well as an unhealthy amount of goofball meme culture. One of my favorite subreddits (i.e., a dedicated page to discuss a specific topic) is “TIL,” which is an initialism for “today I learned.” Today, I learned the acronym “GIF” is pronounced with a soft “G” sound, like in “giraffe.” If I were commenting on Red- dit, I would reply with a “head exploding” emoji character. What is a GIF? It’s an animated image often used online. You’ve probably seen one posted as a comment on someone’s Facebook post. You can send them in text messages. GIFs are everywhere. I always thought “Jif” was the peanut butter and “GIF” (with a hard “g”) was the animated photo file. As it turns out, I have been wrong for years. Again, this isn’t new information; the inventor of the graphics interchange for- mat (aka GIF) cleared this up all the way NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING BEFORE THE CARMEL BOARD OF ZONING APPEALS Docket No.: PZ-2022-00210 V; PZ-2022-00211 V; PZ-2022-00212 V; PZ-2022-00214 V; PZ-2022-00215 V; PZ-2022-00216 V; and PZ-2022-00218 V Notice is hereby given that the Carmel Board of Zoning Appeals meeting on the 28th day of November, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers (1 Civic Sq., 2nd Flr., Carmel, IN 46032) will hold a Public Hearing upon a Development Standards Variance application to: The applicant seeks the following development standards variance approvals: Docket No.: PZ-2022-00210 V UDO Section 5.28.E.4.: Wheel stops required when less than 10’ sidewalk width provided adjacent to parking spaces; 6’ proposed (west). Steve Wilhite invented the animated GIF back in 1987. As an employee of Compu- serve, he was tasked to come up with a universal file format for animated images. As many consumers were getting online for the first time, web content creators em- braced the file format. Today, GIFs serve as shorthand language, similar to how emoji characters dominate text messages. The images are our version of low-resolution moving hieroglyphics. Digital architects will scratch their heads someday as they examine the bizarre aspects of our early 21st-century culture. I still have a hard time with the soft “G” pronunciation of “GIF.” The “G” in “GIF” stands for “graphics,” not “jraphics.” According to both the Oxford English Dictionary and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, both the “JIF” and “GIF” pronun- ciations are acceptable. But the creator prefers the “J” pronunciation. Who am I to argue with the creator? Today I learned I was wrong about how to say “GIF.” Although I find it uncomfortable to say “JIF,” I’m going to start doing it. I don’t like being wrong, so this is a tough pride pill to swallow. After all, I think being able to accept correction will help make me a “jood” person. Joe Shestak, Administrator Carmel Plan Commission (317) 571-2417 September 27, 2022 TRAVEL Provincetown: Where the Pilgrims really landed Commentary by Don Knebel Today, our road trip reaches Cape Cod, a narrow peninsula curving upwardly from the southeastern corner of Massachusetts. We will visit historic Provincetown, where the so-called “Pilgrims” first landed. On Sept. 6, 1620, the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, with 102 passengers, including 41 “Separatists” (later called “Pil- grims”) seeking freedom from the Church of England. Their intended destination was the English Virginia Colony, established in 1607. But storms blew the 100-foot ship off course, and it anchored on Nov. 11, 1620, near the tip of Cape Cod. Because they were now beyond existing legal authority, 41 male passengers, including non-Separatists, signed the “Mayflower Compact” while still onboard, the first American document es- tablishing a self-governing community. The passengers then went ashore near what is now Provincetown. Three expeditions on a small boat around Cape Cod Bay deter- mined that what is now Plymouth, Mass., would make a suitable settlement site. The Mayflower then sailed to Plymouth Harbor, arriving on Dec. 18. The passengers stayed aboard the ship during the harsh winter. Although the indigenous Wampanoag aided them, about half the passengers and crew died of various diseases before the survi- vors went on shore in March 1621. Provincetown, with a population of about 3,600, is a picturesque resort town, long known for its liberal and gay-friendly attitude. Boats along the pier in Province- town Harbor offer whale sighting trips and leisurely cruises. Visitors can get a spec- tacular view of the entire area by climb- ing to the top of the 252-foot-tall Pilgrim Monument, erected between 1907 and 1910, to commemorate the first landfall of the Mayflower and still the tallest all-granite structure in the United States. A nearby museum chronicles the history of Cape Cod. A stone memorial honors the signing of the Mayflower Compact in Provincetown Harbor and includes the text of that document.
