HomeMy WebLinkAboutCPAAC Minutes 09.15.20 RevCarmel Public Art Advisory Committee Tuesday, September 15, 2020, 5:00 p.m. Microsoft Teams Meeting Minutes In Attendance Committee members: Julia Saltsgaver, Cathy Strawn, Kelvin Okamoto, Karen Poyser, Dru Doyle, Jill Reese, Bill Cooler, Christina Thomas City of Carmel: Mayor Jim Brainard City Councilors: Jeff Worrell, Timothy Hannon, Sue Finkam City Employees: Jeremy Kashman, Sharon Kibbe Absent Committee members: Donna Tutwiler Minutes 1.Introduction and Welcome 2.Approval of August 18, 2020 Minutes: Motion: Cathy Strawn, 2nd Kelvin Okamoto, unanimous approval 3.Committee Role & Process a.Open door laws must be followed b.Meeting notice at least 48 hours in advance c.No private emails on discussion- hold comments until meetings 4.Review Current Updated Submission Information- Morning Sun (formerly Pulpo) a.Updated submission form received July 28, 2020 b.Sharon Kibbe and others recently reached out to the Carmel United Methodist Church for reaction. The church is not in favor of the placement of the sculpture at the proposed location of S. Rangeline Rd. and Walnut St (6th St), which is on their NW corner. c.CPAAC members also expressed concern about whether the sculpture will artistically fit with the other present and the future buildings on that corner of Monon Square. d.Mayor Brainard proposed an alternative location at S. Rangeline Rd. and Executive Drive. The CPAAC members feel that this is a more appropriate location while keeping the works of the artist along Rangeline Rd. e.CPAAC members unanimously decided to not approve the proposed location at S. Rangeline Rd. and Walnut St. and to recommend placement at S. Rangeline Rd. and Executive Dr. instead. 5.Future direction of CPAAC: Based upon direction from Councilor Tim Hannon from the previous meeting, discussion was started on best practices for visual arts planning in other municipalities. Council Jeff Worrell gave the each committee member homework to talk with their appointing councilor regarding future direction for CPAAC. 6.New Business: No new business 7.Next Meeting – October 20, 2020 5:00 PM Microsoft Teams Action Items: talk with the city councilor that appointed you and get their input on what the future of visual arts planning in Carmel should look like
