I do have a few questions and want to make sure we are looking at this the same way. I'm assuming you are using table R502.5(2) in the building code. The table clearly states that the maximum girder 1 header span should 8'-9", but there are several other assumption that I believe make this table inappropriate for this use. The table is clearly related to building width and the table stops at 20 ft width The table was developed to show the structural relationship between building width and opening allowed on the header. The design that i have submitted uses a parallel span between beams of 7'-10". This would render this table obsolete for this design criteria. The design criteria I used is based on the raised floor design criteria. The raised floor design criteria is closer in design criteria for a deck rather than a load bearing wall. The raised floor design criteria is based on the total maximum loading (#) per linear foot. This allows for the relationship between the span of the beam and the parallel distance between beam. I I would like to detail the design basis of the project. The maximum span in 11 '-9 1/4" which I have rounded in 12 ft. The maximum parallel distance between beams is 7'-5" and I have rounded to 8 ft. I also assumed a loading! of 30 Ibs 1 sq ft., a safe assumption for a deck elevated 2 It above grade. The total load per linear foot of beam would be 240 Ibs 1 linear foot (8 x30) . . The design loads can be found on page 40 of the attached link Table 14. The table shows that a 3 - 2"x1 0" with:a span of 12 feet can safely support a linear load of 345 Ibs per liner foot. This is well below the calculated load of 240 Ibs. I'm assuming we are both looking at the same issue in different ways. I would like to resolve this as soon as possible. please call me at my office (317) 651-2795 or my cell number (317) 997-1534. If you reply to this email , please reply to all so I receive this at work Thanks Ken Weerts P.E.
