Meridian Street was built as the American headquarters of French-owned Thomson Consumer Electronics (now known as Technicolor). It was designed by architect Michael Graves in 1992 and opened two years later1. The Thomson Consumer Electronics facility itself was a hub of employment in the Carmel and Indianapolis metro area. Around 2,000 people were employed in the original building. In 2007 ownership was transferred to St. Vincent Health.2 Currently the building has multiple occupants, including St. Vincent Ascension / Health Center, Young at Heart Pharmacy (a long-term care pharmacy), Catherine M. Ramey RPH (pharmacy), and Minnick, Natosha E (Doctor). The Indianapolis native and world-renowned architect Michael Graves (1934-2015) was a proponent of the Postmodern style of architecture, which he helped to develop and promote. He designed the Portland Building (City Hall) in 19822, which is now considered a building block of Postmodern architecture as well as an early example of Graves’ humanistic approach to buildings on a larger scale. This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places only 30 years after its completion3, showcasing the importance of Graves’ work. He is perhaps best known for his Postmodern skyscraper in Louisville, The Humana Building, which serves as the headquarters of that health care company. Before designing the Thomson Consumer Electronics building, he also designed the Denver Central Library, the Team Disney Building, and the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resorts. Following the Thomson building, he completed two Indianapolis commissions, the Indianapolis Art Center (1996) and the NCAA Hall of Champions (1997). Health care facilities became a specialty late in his career. Graves was once quoted as saying “I believe well-designed places and objects can actually improve healing, while poor design can inhibit it.” Many also came to know Graves by a line of popular home products he designed for Target, including a Postmodern-inspired tea kettle. Graves designed the Thomson Consumer Electronics Building with a human scale in mind, attempting to create an approachable environment that would also fit into its site, formerly a cornfield. This inspiration can be seen in the variegated green front façade of the building. Graves’ attention to the surrounding of the site and his enjoyment of the whimsy proved highly successful in this critically acclaimed building. The interior of the building has a unique and refreshing take on a modern office- space, following in Graves’ design principles of democratized design. 1 https://blog.saveroomfordesign.com/2015/03/24/a-design-leader-michael-graves/ 2 https://www.archdaily.com/769621/spotlight-michael-graves?ad_medium=widget&ad_name=navigation-prev 3 https://djcoregon.com/news/2012/02/22/portland-building-still-controversial-after-30-years/ DocuSign Envelope ID: F256B16F-0DDE-4100-8556-826B25235343 DocuSign Envelope ID: F256B16F-0DDE-4100-8556-826B25235343 DocuSign Envelope ID: F256B16F-0DDE-4100-8556-826B25235343 DocuSign Envelope ID: F256B16F-0DDE-4100-8556-826B25235343
