LaVier, P.E. June I, 2006 To Whom It May Concern: The description and observations below are a follow up to my previous letter dated May 16, 2006. Prooertv Descriotion: Bella Terra, Lot NO.3 10755 Towne Road Carmel, IN 46033 Builder: Homes By Patrick J:O'Connor 3421 Eden Way Place Carmel, IN 46033 Carmel Permit No.: 05090123 Items observed: 1. The steel angle lintel at the base of the North fireplace supporting stone veneer appears to be structurally adequate as constructed. A concrete slab below the angle coupled with stone veneer tied to the fireplace masonry wall result in virtually no load transferred to the lintel angle. Please reference the attached sketch for a recommended detail at the face of the fireplace. 2. The laminated ridge beam supporting the roof structure above the South fireplace currently bears on a fire brick at the top of the masonry wall of the fireplace. Because this masonry is ground supported, I do not see any structural concerns as constructed. Removing this support, however, by cutting the ridge beam back from its current support would cause the framing to be structurally unsound. If the ridge beam is not supported at both ends, a significant horizontal reaction would ensue at the top of each supporting wall. The wall to rafter connection is currently constructed as a vertical bearing support, and is not capable of resisting an additional applied horizontal force that would result from an unsupported ridge beam. In snort we have a situation where we have a double L VL ridge beam resting on a firebrick at the top of a masonry fireplace 20'-4" above the floor and 16'-4" above the top of the firebox. It is our serious oonoem that this ridge beam must be supported, and that concem is shared by the consulting engineer that we called in to review the situation. Wnh the beam being as high off the flcoras ~ is, we are requesting a waiver of the Notice of Correction. It is our opinion that cutting the beam free would potentially halle far more serious ramifications than leaving ~ in place espeQally in light of the fact of the height above the floor and firebox.
