B,L \ {- The following repair may be used on any 2x8 or 2xlO #2 Southern Pinejoi.r that has been llsed in residential construction under the IRe 2000 Or 2003 code. The joist must be a single joist, 24" ole maxinlum, with uniform load only on it and not a header, beam, or ridge or valley rafter. The joist may be a floor joist, roof rafter, or ceililig joist (used as described in tables R502.3.1, RB02.4, and RB02.5.1 only). Because the repair has the same capacity as a 2x8 Ot 2xlO #2 Sourhem Pine it may be used anywhere on ajoisl used as described above. This repair maybe used only on materials all projects supplied by Davidson Lumber Co. The damage to tile joist can be of any kind and extent. It can be 100 large a hole or notch, a crack or break. The joist can even be cut aJlthe way through, or a segment of dle joist can be missing. There can be only one snch repair per joist. If the joist is a roof rafter with a collar tie, rafter tie, or other means of horizontal restrainr which is not at the bearing the tie may not be in the repair area (except when repaired at the bearing as described below). Apply a scab of #2 Southern Pine that is the same size as the joist (2x8 for 2x8 and 2xlO for 2xlO) tight to one side of Ille joist. The scab must extend at least 24" beyond dle beginning and end of the damaged area. Nail the scab to the joist with 4 evenly spaced rows of nails 3" a/c. There must be 4 rows of 8 nails each (32 nails total) 3"0/c in the part of the scab on either side of the damaged area. If the damaged area is longer than 16" the scab mnst be attached to rhe floor, roof, or ceiling sbeadling in dle same manner as tile original joist. 10d or larger common nails or 0.131" dia, by 3" long nail gnu nails may be used. If dle damaged area begins lesslllan 24" from the end of the joist and tbe joist has a bearing ar that end with no cantilever or additional span beyond ule bearing, the repair may be used as follows. At tllat end the scab must extend to the end of rhe joist and bear on the wall or beam. ' Since it replaces tlle joist at that end it must fnlfill all the 'requirements of the original joist. Requirements sucb as nailing to a rim board or blocking, attacbment to a ceiling joist when used as a roof rafter, and attacbment lathe bearing...On the other side of the damaged area the scab must extend 24" beyond the end of the, damaged area as before. Nailing is as before with 4 rows of nails 3" a/c. If you have any questions please feel fTee to call me. I can be reached at (317) 738-3211. ;;;'~.~ Joseph L. Hemsman, I.E.
