Fax: (317) 738-3440 04/10/06 To whom it may concern, It is my understanding that concern has been expressed over the practice of nailing roof trusses to non- load bearing interior walls because of the potential problems if coiling-panition separation occurs Or therC: is differentiel movement between the truss and the wall from some other cause. Under extremely unusua1 circumstances the truss could pick the wall up off the floor. However, it is much more likely that the nails used to attach the truss to the wall will pull out (assuming two typical nail gun toenails are used). Under typice1 residentiel circumstances even if the trusses did pick the wall up, the wall would not add enough weight to the trusses to cause anything other than a COsmetic problem. Typice1 residential circumstances would be 8' to 9' wood-frame 2x4 walls with 112" drywall, trusses 24" olc with 20-10-0-6 p.s.!. loading, and typical ceiling construction. In other words, this is not a structural cause for concem and Wlder most circumstances only has the potential to, in rare cases, cause cosmetic problems. To avoid any potential problems that can arise in the rare event of ceiling-partition separation we recommend, but do not require, that the trusses not be attached to these walls Or attached with as flexible a connection as possible. One way of doing this is a metal angle with II vertically slotted hole to allow truss movement. Another way is to nail single plated walls to the trusses with II single nail straight up through the bottom of the waIl top plate at each truss. lbis creates II connectiOn that is capable of supporting very little vertice1load. We elso recommend that one oithe methods of floating the drywall corners be used to avoid drywall jom cracks. These methods are discussed in some of the literature produced by the Gypsum Association. However, as stated before while we recommend the trusses not be nailed to the non-bearing wells we have no such requirement, and this recommendation is not to be used in any way to require a framer or home builder to modify there construction practices.
