Ta whom it may ooncem.
It is my understanlllng that concern bas been expm;sed aver the practice afn1lili-r,g rQQftrusses to non-
load !v..nng interior walls ~ of the potential problems if ~ling-pal1ition separation occurs or there
is differential movement between the truss and the wall ftom some other cause. Under Clt1remely unusual
cin:umstances the truss coold piclc the wall up aff the tloor. However, it is much = likely that the
nails used to attach the truss to the wall will pull out (1ISSIIIIIing two typicalllail gun toenails are used).
Under typical residential cin;l1mdA"",.,. even ifthc trusses did pick the wall up, the wall would not add
enough weight to the trusses to cause anything other than a cosmetic problem. Typical residential
circumstlml:cs would be 8' to 9' wood-frame 2Jt4 walls with In." drywall, trusses 24" ole with 20-10-0-6
p.s.f. loading, and typical Ceiling con.struction. (In-6ttielWOi!ls,~thiSiS:DDta-strili:tiii'8l.~use.fc>r. ~-:- J

To avoid any potential problems that can arise in the rare event of ceiling"i'artltlou separation we
n:commAntl.rtiiit-doliOt~thatthe trusses not be ~ed to these walls or attached with as flexible
a conneotion as possible. One way of doing this is a metal angle with a vertically slotted hole to allow
truss movement. Anothm- way is to Dlli1 single plated walls 10 the trusses with a single nail straight up
through the bottom afthe wall top plate at each truss. This Q~ a connection that is capable of
supporting "Vely little vcrticalload. We also recommend that ane of the methods of floating the drywall
comers be used to avoid drywall joint cracks. These methods are di....,.'!"d in some of the literature
produced by the Gypsum Association.
However, as stated before wblle we recommend the trusses not be nailed to the non-bearing walls we
have no such requimnent, and this recomm"""'AfiOD is not ta be used in a:ay way to require a fuuner or
home builder to modify there oonstruction pmctices.
lfyou have any que5tians please feel fieeto call me. I can be~at(3l7) 738-321l.
