It is my 1IIIderstandUIg that concern has been expressed over the practice of _mng roof tnlsses to non- load Jw"",..mg interior walls ~_ of the potential problems if ~ling-partition separation OCCUIS or there is differential movement between the truss and the wall from some other cause.. Under ca.tt.....ely UDllSUa1 circumstances the truss could pick the wall up off the floor. However, it is much more likely that the nails used to attach the truss to the wall will pull out (8SSUID.ing two typical nail gun toenails an: uscd). Under typicallCSi.dential circnrm:tHn""", even if the trusses did pick the wall up, the wall would not add enough weight to the trusses to cause anything other than a cosmetic problem. Typica1 residential ciI'CUlllStanl:cs would be 8' to 9' wood-frame 2x4 walls with In." dJywa11, trusses 24" ole with 20-10-0-6 p.s.f. loading, and typical ceiling construction. In other words, this is not a structural cause for coneem and under most eUnnn<tA.. ~ only has the potential to, in nue ClISl:S, cause cosmetic problems. To avoid llDY potential problems that can arise in the 1'lIl'C event of ceiling-partition separation we recomm....d,!!M..do.DOt ~ that the trusses not be :dboohed to these wa1ls or attached with as flexible a connection as possible. One way of doing this is a metal angle with a vertically slotted hole to allow lIuss movement. rA1io~ '!!!!Y. is 1{r",,;I!!!ngle:pl~'WlIUSto.thliti1lSs'ls:With'aSingJ.eDai1Stiiiiglitup Cthrough.the bottom'ofthe wall ~~p~~ ~ ~. }lrls creates a connection that is capable of supporting very litt1e vertical load. We also recommend that one of the methods offloating the drywall corners be used to avoid drywall joint craclcs. These methods are discussed in SOme of the literature produced by the Gypsum Association. However, as stated before wb.iIe wt; recommAn<llbe trusses not be nailed to the non-bearing walls we rliave_no_suCli~l!iiej..~.and this ~m""dation is DOt to be used in any way to require a framer or home builder to modify there constroction practices.
