HOW TO ASSEMBLE YOUR SAFETY PILOT KIT .
This Safety Pilot Kit must be Insmllee! by a qualified person. Instructions must be followed
carefully when Installing to Insure proper performance and full benefit from your gas log set and
a.rely pilot kit.
G~NEAAL . These instructions must be used as a supplement to the instructions supplied with your
Paterson 9aslog set. Follow the gas log set InstruclJons and make adjustments as appropriate forlhe addition
of a safety pilot kit. Use gas pipe sealing compound which Is resistant to all gases or Teflon tape and apply
to all male pipe connections. Make sure that all connections are tight. Caution: Do not cover the safety pilot
vf1lve with sand or lava granules, it may cause overheating.

~qA L.P. (PROPANE) GAS - The Safety Pilot Kit Is
shipped with a Natural Gas orifice Installed unless
t~9 Safety Pilot Kit was received in the same box as
t~e L.P. burner. To change from Natural to I..P. gllS,
remove the pilot gas supply line (Item No.11) at the
pilot end. Replace the Natural Gas orifice with the
LP. Gas orifice (Item No. 10, Figure 1) contained In
the envelope marked 'L.P..GA$". Reattach the pilot
gas supply line to the pilot.
STEP 1 - CONNECTING THE SAFETY VALVE
TO THE BURNER
A. Remove the heatshield, knob and handle
extension.
B. Apply gas pipe compound or teflon tape to the
fuel injector/airmixer pipe threads. Be careful not
to block the opening of the fuellnjectcr/air mixer.
C. Screw the safety valve (Item No.1) to the fuel
injector or air mixer on the burner (Figure 2). Be
sure that the valve is positioned parallel with the
, fireplace floor.

For LEFT-SIDED Installation:

bumer pans equipped wlth a Safety Control System.
will promote quloker Ignition Of your Peterson Gas
Log Set and protect the Safety Control System from
OVerhelltlng.
A. Inltlll the Flame Dlverter Bracket before
'nstelllng the Pilot Assembly.
B. Place Flame Dlverter Bracket (Item 6) over the
elde edge of the burner pan where the Peterson Salety
ContIoI System pilot bracket (~em 8) will be attactled.
The Bmckelehould be placed approximately t 1/4' from
the back of !he burner pan (Figure 3). See Figure 3C
for left sided installation.
C. Tap the Bracket lightly with a hammer to secure
It in place.

STEP4.ATTACHING THE HEAT SHieLD TO THe
SAFETY CONTROL VALVE
A. 1!1ihe heat shield is desibned to protect the valve, knob and
leXlension handle In both right and lefl-sldedlnsta/lationa.

B. :For Right-sided installations. break otfthe unmarked tab;
:!eaving the lefltab marked 'L" as shown below (Figure
,4B); for Left-sided installations. break off the tab marked
;'L" (Figure 4A).
C. 'place the heat shield on the valve with the midcl/ekey hole
slot resting on the extension handle. Slide the heat shield
back so the middle key hole slot locks onto the valve
collar (where the extension handle attach as to the valve)
and the rear slot fits over the back of the valve. Note:
Make sure the remaining tab Is facing the bumersldeand
not the wall of the fireplace. 'See front cover picture'.

STEP 5 - CONNECTTO THE GAS SUPPLY
A. To Connect the SPK-26 to the gas
supply. lhe CK-4 Connector Kit and it's
component parts will be needed. Which
are Included with your burner system,
B. Attach the Hearth Elbow to the gas
supply stub in your fireplace. Use Teflon
Tape or pipe compound on the stub.
Tighten secur~ly.
C. Attach the smaller Connector Eibow to
the nipple on the SPK.26 control valve.
Use Teflon Tape or pipe compound.
Tighten securely.
D. Connect the Hearth Elbow to the
Connector Elbow with the Aluminum
Tubing. Tighten both ends securely.
E. Test for leaks at all connections with a
soapywatersolutlon. Never USB an open
flame to oheck for taaks.

SPK-26 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
HOW TO LIGHT THE PILOT THIS SHOWS A FlIGH'ToSIDED INS'TALLATIO,
, To IIghtthe pl/ot1rom the PILOT position (FIg::,re 6), push In
,j 'sllghtlyontheknob and turn to the OFFpos n(FlgureS).
J Wait five minutes, then turn the knob to the PILOT pOsition
l (Figure 6). Push the knob fully in and atthe same time place
'j' a long lighted match or long necked lighter at the pilot
burner. The pilot should light HOldthe knob In approXimately
I 60 seconds. If the pilot does not slay lit, turn to the full OFF
! position (Figure 5). WaltfivB minutes and repeat the lighting
I instructions.

PILOT ADJUSTMENT., ShOUld the pilot require
adjustment, the/ollowing steps should be taken: With the
pilot lit and the control knob in the pilot position, usea long
narrow sorew driver and turn the pilot adjustment screw
sI9W'Y ciockY"ise to l re,duce the pilot flame or
oounterclockwlse to increase the flame (Figure 8). The
adjustment SCrew can be turned so that the pilot flame is
cO,mpletely extinguished. Some tightening of the sorew
may occur during adjustment; this Is normal. The pilot
flame should be a soft blue oolorwlth slightlyyeUOwllpplng
which encircles the thermocouple tip.
Turn the control knob to the 'on" position to assure proper
ignitIon of the log burner,
