Fax: (317i 738-3440 i I i I i I The following repair may be ~sed on any 2x8 or 2x 10 #2 Southern Pine joist that has been used in residential , construction under the IRe 2000, or 2003 code, The joist must be a single joist, 24" olc maximum, with uniform load only on it and not a header, bea~" or ridge or valley rafter. The jO.ist may be a floor joist, roof rafter, or ceiling jois( (used as described in tables R50 ,3,1, R802.4, and R802,5,j only), Because the repair has the same capacity as a 2x8 or 2x j 0 #2 Southern Pine it ma.y, e used anywhere on a joist used as described above, This repair may be used only on materials on projects supplied1by Davidson Lumber Co, The damage to the joist can b~ of any kind and extent It can be too large a hole or notch, a crack or break, The joist can even be cut all the way t/u'ough, or a segment of the joist can be missing, There can be only one such repair per joist If the joist is a roof rafth with a collar tie, rafter tie, or other means of horizontal restraint which is not at the bearing the tie may not be in the ~pair area (except when repaired at the bearing as described below), Apply a scab of #2 Southern Pine that is the same size as the joist (2x8 for 2x8 and 2x IO for 2x 10; tight to one side of the joist The scab must exten4 at least 24" beyond the beginning and end of the damaged area, Nail the scab to the joist with 4 evenly spaced ro~s of nails 3" olc, There must be 4 rows of 8 nails each (32 nails tOtAl) 3"0/c in the pan of the scab on either side of the damaged area, If the damaged area is longer than 16" the scab must be attached tG the floor, roof, or ceiling sheat9ing in the same manner as the original joist. !Od or larger COlllmor. nails or 0,13 J" dia, by 3" long nail gun nails may!be used, If the damaged area begins less than 24" from the end of the joist and the joist has a bearing at thar end with no cantilever or additional span beyo~d the bearing, the repair may be used as follows, At that end the scab must extend to the end of the joist and bear on the wall or beam, Since it replaces the joist at that end it must fulfill aU the requirements of the original joist iRequirements such as nailing to a rim board or blocking, attachment to a ceiling jois, when used as a roof rafter, an~ attachment to the bearing. On the other side of the damaged area the scab must .extend 24" bevond the end of tht damaged area as before, Nailing is as before with 4 rows of nails 3" olc, If you hav~ any ques,ions pleasF feel free to call me.
