College Park Church Prayer Path & Volleyball Courts
Carmel, Indiana Stormwater Narrative
The proposed development will include the construction of an 8’ wide asphalt prayer path around the perimeter
of the site and the construction of two sand volleyball courts at the northwesternmost corner of the subject site.
Per the record drawings and the report by Schneider Corporation dated March 3, 2010 (2010 Report), the prayer
path was part of the original development plan for the subject site and was labeled “future prayer path”.
In total, 0.31 acres of asphalt path is proposed, and the volleyball courts will be roughly 0.18 acres. Generally,
the proposed path will follow the original layout and/or intent to the extent possible. The Church has also
proposed a path alternative and increasing the total path area to 0.32 acres (0.01 acre increase). The grading of
the path and the courts the will roughly follow the existing grade so the hydrologic disturbance/disruption of the
actual site is negligible. The volleyball courts will have an underdrain that will drain south/southeast and
discharge to the existing drainage swale located northwest of the gravel parking lot area.
Per a meeting with the City of Carmel engineering department staff on June 3rd, MeritCorp has reviewed the
impact of the development to detention. The 2010 report noted above, was for the development of the gravel
parking lot addition located near the northwest corner of the subject site and part of Drainage Area “DB North”
that drains to the northwesternmost dry detention basin. The 2010 Report indicates the gravel lot was planned to
be paved as part of the original development and utilizing gravel would reduce the Curve Number (CN) utilized
for the detention design from 84.92 to 84.02 (The original report is not available to confirm the original areas).
Below is the breakdown of the CN calculations from the 2010 report (the areas from the report have been added
in Red for ease of the review).
Utilizing the record information available, the proposed areas for “DB North” were determined. For simplicity,
the Outdoor Venue project impervious areas have been excluded from the calculation because those areas were
addressed and approved with the added volume in the detention basin. The areas for the existing gravel parking
lot, existing asphalt parking lot were generally confirmed but adding the proposed path in “DB North” (0.26 of
the 0.31 acres mentioned above) is slightly higher at 5.66 acres (Refer to the attached Overall Drainage Area
exhibit). Based on the 5.44 acres of impervious area noted in the 2010 Report, it can be concluded the 0.26 acres
of path was not included in their analysis of “DB North”. The original report is not available to confirm if the

path was part of the 8.05 acres listed for the original overall development. Conservatively, the CN was calculated
with the additional impervious area and the revised CN is 84.32 and below the original 84.91 (see the CN
calculation below).
As noted above, a majority of the proposed path, 0.26 acres of the 0.31 total acres, is part of drainage area DB
North and tributary to the northwesternmost basin. As noted in the 2010 report all the basins are hydraulically
connected. Conservatively, to account for the additional proposed path area of 0.05 acres (or 0.31 acres total)
was added to the CN as additional impervious area for DB North. The CN was calculated to be 84.39 and below
the original 84.91 indicating the existing detention system should have adequate capacity.
Given the proposed CN being below the originally designed CN, stormwater detention is not included with this
project. As noted previously, the 8’ wide path will have negligible impact to the runoff flow paths draining
through the primarily large pervious surfaces adjacent to the path.
