Please find enclosed materials related to St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana's ("St.
Vincent") application for a variance from the maximum square footage requirement contained in
Section 25.07 of the Carmel City Code. St. Vincent wishes to install a new sign upon the facade
of the Heart Center of Indiana located at 106th and Meridian Streets. This matter is scheduled to
appear before the Hearing Officer on October 23,2006.

1. The approval of this variance will not be injurious to the public health, safety, morals and general welfare of the
community because:
the proposed sign is not materially different from the current sign and
as a mere sign for a hospital, has no affect on the public health,
safety, morals and general welfare of the community.
2. The use and value of the area adjacent to the property included in the variance will not be affected in a
substantially adverse manner because:
the sign is not materially different from the current sign.
3. The strict application of the terms of the Zoning Ordinance to the property will result in practical difficulties in the
use of the property because:

its corporate logo to fit onto the sign, which would cost millions of
dollars to replace, or omit the. words "The Heart Center" which would
cause the loss of valuable brand equity.

Unless a variance is granted, 8t. Vincent will face the practical difficulty of either
(1) redrafting its corporate logo, which would cost millions of dollars, or (2) omitting the
words "Heart Center of Indiana" from the sign, and lose valuable brand recognition in a
competitive heart hospital market.
The Heart Center of Indiana has, until recently, been owned by The Heart Center
of Indiana, LLC and been marketed as the "Heart Center of Indiana". Earlier this year,
The Heart Center of Indiana, LLC changed its formally incorporated name to 81. Vincent
Heart Center of Indiana, LLC, and the facility will be marketed as the "8t. Vincent Heart
Center of Indiana".
The changes are part of a larger initiative by 8t. Vincent to expand the corporate
brand of 8t. Vincent, so as to include the 8t. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana with other
8t. Vincent branded hospitals, such as St. Vincent Children's Hospital, 8t. Vincent
Hospital Carmel, 8t. Vincent Women's Hospital, etc. The name "8t. Vincent Heart Center
of Indiana" became a perfect name because it bring the facility within the 8t. Vincent
family of hospitals without sacrificing the brand recognition already enjoyed by the Heart
Center of Indiana.
With the change in name comes the need to change all the signs on the facility,
and for the aforementioned reasons 8t. Vincent desires that the sign contain both the 8t.
Vincent corporate logo, which features three doves, and the words "the Heart Center of
Indiana". Such a sign has been designed, and from an engineering and production matter,
cannot be made any smaller than 135 square feet without redrafting the 8t. Vincent logo
or omitting the words "Heart Center of Indiana" .
