Dear Mr. Liggett,
Mr. David Browning, Cain Companies Community Manager requested that I contact you
regarding a question that was raised during your final inspection of the above referenced
single-family residence. The house had the brick removed and replaced on the south face
of the Garage and the south end of the west face of the Garage.
The question that was raised was the amount of brick overhang on the areas of brick
replacement. The brick overhang at several locations measured I Yz inches.
The Building Code that applies for this remediation project is the International Building
Code for One and Two Family Dwellings 2003 and adopted by the State of Indiana with
modifications on September I 1,2005.
Under Section R703.7, Stone and Masonry Veneer, General, there is no specified limit on
the allowable brick overhang. Under Section R606, General Masonry Construction, there
is a discussion in Sections 606.3 and 606.3.1 on support conditions for corbels, which
should not have an overhang exceeding V, of the width of the masonry unit.
I do not believe that Sections 606.3 or 606.3.1 can be constructed to apply to a Wall
Covering under Section R703.7. Section R703.7 is the appropriate section that is to be
applied to this project.

Based on the above discussion it is my professional engineering opinion that the brick
veneer has been replaced correctly.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call.
Very truly yours,
