Assignment I was asked to visit the future development site of Asherwood South, which is on the West side of Ditch Road, just north of 96th Street, Carmel Indiana. My goal was to perform a Woodland Evaluation for the second phase of the development. The Woodland Evaluation was to identify: • The dominant tree species (the majority of the species in each area). • Secondary tree species (species found but might just be one tree). • The composition of the understory of the area (i.e. shrubs taking up the area under the trees). • I was also asked to determine the Woodland Type, of each particular area, using the City of Carmel definitions as follow. Observations On August 23, 2023, I visited the site and spent time organizing the property into four (4) distinct areas. I then assessed each area and took photographs to assist in reporting the general impression of each area. This site has previously been developed as a golf course. Therefore, many of the trees are not natives which could affect the classification as defined by Carmel. For this report I considered the trees as a whole, in spite of native classification, because many have been planted for screening purposes, and are doing a good job meeting that goal. 3 Aerial of Asherwood South- Boxes Show Study Areas with # Illustration showing area with lots #1 #2 #3 #4 4 Area #1- Northeast Corner- Lots 45, 46 This area is in the Northeast corner. It will be developed into two building sites. There is a perimeter planting that runs north and south along Ditch Road. A lot of effort has been expended to create this perimeter planting, and it adds a great deal of screening, for the whole east side of the property. The pear, red maple and river birch are in poor condition and add little to the site. Species found in Area #1- (Note not a complete inventory) Dominant Species Scientific name Norway spruce Picea abies Honey locust Gleditsia tricanthos Secondary Species River birch Betula nigra Ornamental pear Pyrus calleryana White pine Pinus strobus Red maple Acer rubrum Understory Turf Mounding- mentioned for its interesting character Description of Area #1-Northeast Area #1-A as a whole would be considered a Young Woodlands according to City of Carmel Zoning Ordinance. The woodland section consists of 25% or more trees that are 6 inches or greater. Note: It might not be considered Young Woodlands as many of the trees are not native. Photos of Area #1 Norway spruce along Ditch add a great deal of screening. 5 The pears along the drive (on right side of picture) are in poor condition. The honey locust (in middle) might be worth salvaging. The River birch throughout are in marginal condition. 6 Area #2- Northwest Corner- Lots 41, 42 The two pin oaks in the north are worthy of preservation, if they fit into the lot development. The area along the drainage feature is made up of primarily scrub but might be worth retaining is the drainage can be worked. Otherwise, there are few trees of any interest, or that would be worth retaining, in this area as they are all poor species and in poor condition. The woodland Section consists of 25% or more trees that are 6 inches or greater. Photos of Area #2 Pears along the drive are poor species in poor condition. 7 More pears- Again poor species in poor condition. Maples are in poor condition. This area along the drainage area is primarily scrub but might be worth retaining i f the drainage can be worked. 8 Area #3 – Middle West- Lots 43, 44 This area consists mainly of Austrian pine species planted along the border as a perimeter planting. The Austrian pines are in relatively good condition. There are a few maple and mulberry trees growing in different areas along the tree line. Photos of Area #3 Trees planted along the border as a buffer. The understory of the tree line is sparce in places. 9 Two red maples could be retained with some proper tree care. More border plantings with a couple dead trees mixed in. 10 Area #4- Southern Recreational Area Area #4 is the Area around the pond. There is also a border of pines along ditch that add to the buffering of the property. The woodland Section consists of 25% or more trees that are 6 inches or greater. A few trees at the south end of the lake (left side of picture) with a tree line that is not part of this section (on the right side of photo). Note: This is not an inspection of the trees for safety.
