Construction is expected to begin in the spring at site. From Nt Because it was mostly open and completely unheated, the homemade court came to be known as 'The Refrigerator." Local historian Phil Hinshaw says that before the opening of the "new" Wgh school in Septem- ber 1922, which for the first time had its own gymnasium, the basketball team played its games in the wide, open center driveway of the lumberyard. Boards were erected above the ~ driveway to form a temporary roof , when a game was played. \ The lumberyard dates from around the time the Monon Rail- road came to town in 1883. Most of the lumber for homes built in the village of Carmel after that pate came through the Allen A. \Vilkinson Lumber Co., the fIrst )usiness on that site. 1 In the 1970s, the yard was umed into a unique two-story J. shopping rpall with small offIces and shops on either side of a cen- tral corridor. That era is :over, but the nos- talgia remains. North of the Lumberyard site, AMLI plans 104 apartments. Townhouses and lofts will abut the MononTrail. Retail space will be north of First Street S.w. Units will range from 800 to 2,500 square feet, depending on tenant needs. The property bounded by First Avenue S.W. west to the Monon Trail, and Main Street south to First Street S.W. will be the site of the retail portion of the de- velopment. The Lumberyard site will see only residential construcc tion, with patios facing the Monon Trail. 'The buildings along the Monon will be a combination of three-story lofts and townhomes,~ said AMLI senior vice president Jim Thomas. "They'll be in an ur-' ban brownstone, townhome . style. .. . . Thomas hopes construction can begin this spring, with the first move-ins between nine months and a year later for both -retail and residential occupants. While nearly all of the tenants. of the Lumberyard Mall have moved to other locations, one ten- ant still is trying to work out the details of her move. Donna Risser, owner or Hair Razors Ltd., was prepared to leave but she has been caught.in a dilemma involving the need for a zoning variance. The loca, tion she seeks pres- ently is zoned for residences, so the property owner must apply for a variance. That application is scheduled to come before the Carmel Board of Zoning Appeals on Jan. 28. "I was scheduled to be the first one gone. Now, it looks like I'll be the last," Risser lamented. "I'll have three days to get it all together if (the variance) goes through." Risser is taking a wait-and-see attitude. She shrugged and said that in the event a variance is not granted, she'll just store her equipment and go to work for someone else until she can fInd an adequate site in which to relo- cate her business. --._../ CITY OF CARMEL/CLAY TOWNSHIP HAMILTON COUNTY, INDIANA APPLICATION FOR BOARD OF ZONING APPEALS ACTION USE VARIANCE FEE: $1,050.00 DOCKET NO. \JV~ /6$- \,) \ DATE RECEIVED: jJ-uc,- c:>] 1) Applicant: Rlc:.;1M6 SA-tUI.\~ S Address: 1103.3 HAI/~ ST/C4\ 2) I Project Name: }lAiR.
