There is no single perfect tree; the most successfiul course is to match the planting site limitations with the right tree for that spot. Each site must be evaluated and possible res trictions of tree species noted. These restrictions include rooting space, sari texture, soil pH, drainage, exposure, overhead wires and surroundh1g building su rfaces. The trees appearing on this list have different requirements and tolerances. All of these species should do well in the urban forest environment of Carmel. Before selecting any particular species or variety further research should be done to ensure that the site would satisfy the specific requirements of the tree. Some of the species or cultivars listed here may not be readily available at local nurseries, particularly in cal ipers large enough for plantir1g ir1 high traffic areas. Tree staking may provide limited protection. CITY OF CARM EL URBAN FORESTRY Street Tree Planti ng Specifi cations The purpose of these specificati ons is to assure that trees to be planted upon pu blic grounds and the public right of ways are properly maintained and preserved to protect th eir eco nomic, aesthetic, and ecological benefit to the City of Carmel and its residents. (a)Street Trees that are to be pla nted in a Public Pa rkway must first be approved by the City's Arborist. Approved plantings must be maintained one (1) year after the trees are planted and any trees wh ich fa il to survive or do not exhibit normal growth characteristics of health and vig or with in the one-year period must be replaced at the expense of the Property Owner. The one-year period shall begin at each planting and sh all recommence as Trees are replaced . Upon completion of a Street Tree planting, the landscape contractor shall contact the City for a preliminary inspection. The guarantee period shall be gin after the approva l of the City and fi nal inspection shall be made at the end of the guarantee period. (b)Absent specific approval from the City's Arborist, no Street Tree may be pla nted so that its center is closer than 2 fe et from a sidewalk or wa lkway. No Street Tree may be planted so that its center is closer than 2 fe et fro m a curb . New Street Tree plantings will be li ned up with neighboring trees provided that the neighborh ood trees meet the above mentioned distances. (c) (d) (e) (g) (h) (i) U) At the intersection of roadways or vehicular access points, no Plant Material with mature height of greater than 30 inches shall be planted within the sight tr iangle measuring 30 feet along the boundary of each of the intersecti ng roadways, measured fro m the point of intersecting curb lines, except where engineering sta ndards ind icate otherwise. Absent specific approval from the City's Arborist, no Street Tree planting is perm itted where the distance between the curb and detached sidewa lk is less th an 5 fe et. In addition, a planting area defined by tow curbs, curb and fe nce , or sidewalk and fe nce must be 5 fe et wide if Street Trees are to be pla nted . Larger maturing trees should be pl aced 35 feet apart and smaller maturing trees 20 feet apart. The City's Arborist may req uire wider spacing if it is necessary for development of the Tree for safe use of the street or sidewa lk. When space is limited or to ach ieve certain desig n effects, closer spacing may be considered . No Street Tree shall be planted closer than 10 fe et from any private driveway or alley. No Street Tree other than low grow ing species that do not attain a mature height greater than 20 feet shall be pla nted under or within 20 fe et of any overhead power lines. No Street Tree shall be planted so that its center is with in 10 fe et of a fi re hydrant, water valve or ma nhole. All plantings shall adhere to the City of Ca rme l Tree and Shrub Installation Specific ations (root fl are at grade level). Remove to gs ond labels. Prune only dead or broken branches or double leaders. Rem ove exc ess soil to locate and ex.pose root Rare. Root Rore $hould be l ·2 inches above finish grode. Finish grade. AFter lree is in the hole, remove rest of basket cutting vertically. Backfill using ex isting soil. Wa ter thoroughly fo eliminate air pockets. Add 1-2 inches of hardwood mulch. Keep mulch 3 inches from trunk. 2 TIMES BALL DIAMETER r 2 TIMES BALL DIAMETER CITY OF CARM EL Tree Planting St andards URBAN FO RESTRY Prepa ring the Planting Site •Contact Holey Maley (within lndiana-HI00-382-5544) to locate any underground utilities before you dig. •If possible, prepare the site before you bring in the tree. • Keep the root ball well watered and keep the tree in a shaded place until you are ready to plant. • It is imperative lo determine the trunk fiare on each balled and burlaped tree before the planting site is dug so that the depth of the planting site can be properly measured. •The trunk fiare is the point where roots beg in to branch fro m the trunk. (The top of the root ball is not always the trunk flare .) , Measure the height from the base of the trunk fiare to the bottom of the root ball. , Dig to the depth of the trunk fl are. , Dig the space at least 2 times the diameter of root ball. • Break up com pacted soil.
