Paving stone installation
10 E.j(cavation
1.1 If conduit or wires are located in the area to be excavated,
contact the representatives of the company concerned
~e!Qre th~ work is started. (Dig safe)
1.2 To e.nsure sufficient drainage, excavate the subgrade soil
to obtain a minimum incline of 2% (1/4 inch per foot).
o
VI The excavation contour should extend beyond the surface
to be paved by at least 12". Ideally, this distance should
bet1 to 1 1/2 times the thickness of the foundation base.
The stability of the project depends on this measurement,
which ensures that the paving stones at the edge will be
aStell supported as those in the center.
1.4 Level the bottom of the excavation with a rake and,
if the soil is sandy, compact it with a vibrating plate
or ro!!er. It is preferable not to pack clay soil at this stage.
In ~!!l$ case, the use of a geotextile membrane'
p!i!l;ed between the natural soil and the foundation
III recommended to prevent foundation
I;Qhtamination by clay and ensure greater stability.

2- Foundation
4- Laying the Paving Stones
Spread and compact the 0-3/4" processed stone in 4" layers.
Lightly water the 0-3/4" stone to make tamping easier. To ensure
an adequate base foundation, compact the stone several times
with a vibrating plate or roller. (Ref: Photo #2) Once this stage
is completed, you will be able to see what the final result will
look like. Final compacted base should be 3" below the
predetermined finished grade.
4.1 Arrange the paving stones according to the pattern
chosen with a 900 angle if possible. Proceed by walking
on the paving stones (Ref: Photo #6). Fill the holes
left by the pipes.
4.2 Paving stones are manufactured with side spacers that will
set a space of 1/8" between each paver. A space of 3/32"
must be allowed for paving stones without spacers.
You can verify the final level of the pavers by placing a
paver on a guide. (Ref: Photo #3)
Refer to typical installation drawings (see page 43).
4.3 To obtain an even distribution of color and texture, it is
recommended that you choose paving stones from more
than one cube at a time, Moreover, working across each
cube always gives the best results.
3- Installation bed
3.1 Screed 1" of concrete sand over the compacted base
(Ref: Photo #4). Bear in mind that a 1" bed will be
reduced down to 5/8" in thickness once compacting is
completed after the paving stones are installed.
4.4 Check the alignment of the pavers after every five rows
installed and adjust them, if necessary, using a screwdriver.
3.2 Screed the concrete sand using two (2)
1" diameter pipes and a straight plank (Ref: Photo #5).
Any significant variation in bed thickness may cause
irregularities in the paved surface.
4.5 Install paving stones up to the last row. To avoid having to
cut paving stones later, determine the position of the curbs
to finish with a complete paving stone.
3.3 Take care not to compact the sand before laying the pavers
on the installation bed.
{'
4.6 If necessary, you can cut the paving stones using a chisel
or specialized toois such as guillotine splitter or a concrete
saw (Ref: Photo #7). It is recommended that you use a
chalk line to mark the paving stones to be cut. If you have
to use a guillotine to cut the stones, be sure that the cut is
at a slight angle as pavers cut this way are much easier to
install. If you use a concrete saw, keep away from the
paving stones already installed, since the dust and dirt
from sawing will permanently stain them. Wear safety
glasses when cutting concrete products.
4.7 On both sides of the paving surface, proceed with installing
the Celtik Curbs. (Ref: Photo #8)
4.8 Once you have finished laying them, stabilize the pavers
using a vibrating plate compactor. (Ref: Photo #9) This
operation will compact the stones into the bed while
levelling the surface. For best results, run the plate over the
pavers two or three times in both directions. The paving
stones will compact into the concrete sand by about 3/8".
5- Filling the joints
5.1 Spread concrete sand over the paving stone, let dry,
if necessary, then work it into the joints by sweeping in all
directions. (For improved performance, use stabilizing
sand.) (Ref: Photo #10).
5.2 Remove the excess sand and work the remainder
in by passing the vibrating plate over it.
Repeat steps 5.1 and 5.2 if necessary.
5.3 If, after a few days, some joints are not properly filled,
repeat the procedure.
The information in this table shows the minimum required for a job well done. Anything
above this level signals improved stability of the whole,
5.4 We suggest setting aside a number of paving stones
as replacements in case of staining.

and get some satisfactory
answers. Here are some
questions we recommend
you ask:
.. How many years of experience does the installer have?
.. Can the installer supply references for the last three jobs
completed? (Don't hesitate to contact these people and ask to
see the work that was done.)
.. Is the installation plan clear and accurate? Do you understand
every part of it? (You should feel free to ask to see photos and
samples of products in the colors of your choice.)
.. Is the installer prepared to draw up a written contract before
work starts? (Make sure it includes a description of the work to
be done and a schedule. Use the Belgard installation guide as
the basis for comparing technical specifications.)
.. What kind of guarantee is the installer prepared to offer as to the
quality of the work?
Above all, don't hesitate to ask any other questions that might
