Re: College Wood Elementary School

Carmel, IN
Project No. 201101.02
Dear Tony:
In response to the Carmel Building Inspector's Item No.4, regarding the handrail at the stage, we
offer the following:
1. IBC 1003.3.3.6 Handrails indicates that for stairways' required be more than 88 inches in '
width" intermediate handrails are required to be provl . The occupant load for the stage '
does not generate required exit width in excess of 88 inches. At 7 SF/person, the occupant.
load is 124 people, which would require total egress width of 38 inches. Two means of ,
egress are required as a minimum. We have provided a ramp with a width of 44 inches as I
one means of egress at the back of the stage. The steps at the front of the stage provide a
second means of egress. We are adding handrails at each side of the proscenium to
provide an additional two means of egress. These would only be required to be the
minimum 30 inches in width.
2. IBC 509.1 Guardrails recognizes that stages are different from other egress situations and
Exception 2 eliminates the need for guardrails on the auditorium side of a stage, raised
platform, and other raised floor areas.
The conditions at College Wood Elementary School are similar to other completed and accepted
installations throughout Carmel, Hamilton County, and the State of Indiana. We would ask the
Inspector to reconsider this issue with the addition of the proscenium wall handrails.
If you have any questions or require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact our
office.
Sincerely,
FANNING/HOWEY ASSOCIATES, INC.
