All structural elements shall be isolated from the firewall. Cripples may be installed as, required beneath each bearing condition. A licensed engineer shall certify all lam beams that are used to transfer vertical loads. 2. Joist hangers may be used and shall conform to all conditions of the International Building Code. 3. (2) Layers of 5/8" FC drywall shall wrap around exposed wood studs at intersection of I exterior walls to comply with the requirement of extending all (2) hr firewalls to the ' exterior sheathing. 4. Drafts stops shall be installed as required. 5. All nails that are currently used to secure drywall shall be considered temporary. Approved drywall screws shall be installed to the required depth and covered with approved spackling compound. 6. Approved caulking shall seal all cracks and openings. Stuart R. The fire inspector is requiring that stair landings and stringers be re-supported in such a way that the load bearing members will not penetrate the firewall between the units. Your plan for correcting this problem as described to me is as follows: . Shore the existing framing that penetrates the firewall. . Cut back the existing headers and landing framing that penetrate the firewall. . Install new gypsum board over the penetrations in the firewall. . Re-support the cut back headers and landing framing with a new load- bearing wall built beside the firewall. The new load-bearing walls will stack up from the foundation to the higher stair landings. It is my opinion that these new load bearing walls will be adequate to support the stair landings and stringers. Please let me know if you need any additional information.
