RE: Stair connection
To All Concerned:
I am writing this letter to address the stair landings being manufactured by Carter Lee Building
Components, Mooresville, Indiana, and supplied to Ryland Homes, Indianapolis, Indiana. The
expressed concern was in regards to the lack of joist hangers at the ends of the joists that create the
landings. The joists are 2 x 8 NO.2 SYP or better spaced a maximum 24" on center, supporting 40 PSF
of floor live load and 10 PSF of dead load. The joists are attached to a single-ply rim board using (4)-
8d nails (.113 x 3.25") or (4)-8d nails (.131 x 3.25").
Connection us~g 8d (.113 x 3.25") gun nails
Four nail connection (end-grain) = 211.6#; supports a maximum 4'2-13/16" joist
Four nail connection (toe-nail) = 262#; supports a maximum 5'2-14/16" joist
Connection using 8d (.131 x 3.25 ") gun nails
Four nail connection (end-grain) = 284#; supports a maximum 5'8-3/16" joist
Four nail connection (toe-nail) = 352#; supports a maximum 7'0-114" joist
When using the toe-nail option, the nails are driven at a 30. angle through the carried member, having
two-thirds of the nail length penetrating the carrying member.
I hope tbis addresses all ofyonr concerns. If! can be offurtber assistance, please feel free to call.
