RE: S1. Peters United Church of Christ Landscape Plan
Dear Dave:
My comments on the St Peters landscape plans are as follows:
1. At least one shade tree should be planted in each new parking lot island.
2. In the tree and shrub graphic details, the note that states "Place root ball
1"-2" higher than finished grade" should be changed to read "root flare".
This helps to prevent planting the tree too deep in case the plant arrives
from the nursery too deep within the root ball, a fairly common problem. If
the root flare is placed at grade, the plant will be at the proper planting
height.
3. Species considerations: Camus florida, Flowering Dogwood should be
replaced with a more disease resistant variety such as Camus kousa or
Camus alternifloria, Pagoda Dogwood.
Because of disease pressures (fungal Rust passed by Juniper species)
and thorns, an alternative should be chosen for the Winter King
Hawthorns along the parking lot. Alternatives could include Redbud
(Gercis Canadensis), Yellowwood (Gfadrastis kentukea), Tri-color Beech
(Fagus s/yvatica 'Purpurea Tri-color"), or American Smoke Tree (Cotinus
abovatus).
Because Red Maples (Acer rubrum) are extremely over planted and suffer
several plant health care issues (thin bark tends to be injured and the
infected by fungal canker, chlorosis-yellowing, etc.), alternatives should be
chosen for the two Red Maple species. Native species that could be
chosen include Tulip tree (Liodendron tulipifera), American Hophornbeam
(Ostrya virginia), Black Gum (Nyssa syfvatica), or American Beech (Fagus
grandifloria ).
