Tbe girls (chickens) are pets to us and provide us with approximately three delicious eggs per day, entertainment, amusement, and education for my son. The chickens show less affection than tbe cat but more than the hermit crab. Their favorite food is green cherry tomatoes from the garden. Not knowing the Call11ellaw that prohibits keeping chickens on less than five acres, we talked to our immediate neighbors before we acquired them and found that they would have no problem with our having chickens as long as their was no rooster. We got them as chicks and have been rai sing them since March. We ate responsible pet o\vners and the main concems we have anticipated and our responses are as follow: 1) Noise - They cackle and cluck, especially after laying an egg, for about a minute, Overall. it considerably less noise than the barking ofthe Great Dane next door, about which we clo not complain. 2) Smell ~ The coop is lined \vith pine shavings, \'v'hich are cleaned out and replaced regiJlarly. Most of the used shavings and chicken droppings go to our gardening. friends and some get composted into our garden. There is no offensive odor or we would get rid 0 f them, 3) The Chickens are healthy and if they ever appear unhealthy we will take them to a veterinarian, like every other pet owner. 4) We do not sell the eggs or benefit fTOm them monetarily in any way, It is not a farm. 5) The chickens do not free range, We do not allow them to run around free in the back yard. They stay in the coop. In the six months that we have had them so far they have not escaped and show on inclination to do so. 6) We have no intention of acquiring any more chickens - tlu"ee is enough. We would never ever have a rooster.
