An existing home is located in the southwest portion of the property along with a two small barns. There are many mature trees present throughout this property. This property is bordered on the north by 99th Streett on the east and west by wooded residential properties{ and on the south by a subdivision. The topography on the site is relatively flat with little change in elevation. Section A is a wooded area with a small area of turfgrass surrounding the existing home located in this section. There are many large, mature trees in this section which includes many Tuliptree, Sugar maple, White ash, and Oak. This area provides a habitat for the variety of wildlife present in the area. Section B is entirely wooded and has a number of large, mature trees present as well. There are several large Oak and Black walnut present that would be good candidates for preservation. The northeastern portion of this section contains a lot of Sugar maple and Black cherry. Young Sugar maple, Black cherry and Red elm are prevalent in the understory. Evidence of wildlife is present throughout this section as this area also provides a habitat for wildlife. Section C is an area in the central portion of the property that includes a small clearing and the surrounding growth of White ash and Silver maple. The understory growth in this section is very thick in some areas and is mostly shrub growth of Multiflora rose, Spicebush, and Amur honeysuckle. There is little ground layer growth in much of this section and is instead littered with broken branches and twigs. There are several deer paths that cross through this section. Planning for the preservation of these trees would increase the value of the property and the marketability of the site. Any trees that are to be preserved near future home sites should be individually assessed to determine the health and structural integrity of each tree. Proper care will help maximize the long-term health of the tree and to minimize potential risks. Please contact us if there are any questions about this work. Inspect the property and provide an analysis of the natural resources. 2. Mark these natural resources on an aerial photo. 3. Rate the wooded areas. 4. Note and mark any unusual or exceptional trees or landmarks. 5. Record species of flora and fauna found on site. 6. Photo-document property if requested. limitations Inspections were conducted August 7, 2007. As such, they are limited by the time frame and present field conditions. These are not long-term observations that would be needed to fully represent the full spectrum of plants and animals, which use the land over the course of the year and the changing seasons. Spring and fall blooming plants, as well as migrating animals are some of the categories that are not represented in this report. Methodology All areas in the scope of work were inspected on foot. Tallies of the tree species were taken by species and size. The property was separated into different areas defined by changes in tree, plant, or land cover characteristics. These areas are plotted on the aerial photo attached as Appendix A. A part of this analysis is to determine the woodland classification according to the Carmel Zoning Ordinance definitions. The definition of young woodland, according to the City of Carmel Zoning Ordinance, is "an area of plant material covering one-half (1/2) acre, or more, and consisting of thirty percent (30%) or more canopy trees having an eight (8) inch or greater caliper, or any grove consisting of seven (7) or more trees having a ten (10) inch or greater caliper." All animals and birds seen, heard, or found evident by sign were noted. Plants seen along the way were also noted. All plants, animals and other life noted during the inspection are listed in the appendices. More complete lists could be obtained through more intensive investigations. Findings This property is located in a residential area and is nearly entirely wooded. An existing home is located in the southwest portion of the property along with a tv'Io small barns. There are many mature trees present throughout this property. This property is bordered on the north by 99th Street, on the east and west by wooded residential properties, and on the south by a subdivision. The topography on the site is relatively flat with little change in elevation. The information for this report was gathered in all areas of the property as indicated on the aerial photograph in Appendix A. The property can be divided into three major areas: the woodland in the western portion of the property (Section A), the western woodland (Section B), and the disturbed area in the center of the property (Section C). B) The following descriptions will list the general description of the area including dominant tree species and any other conditions or flora/fauna not found on the rest of the property. Section A: Western Portion of Woodland This area is located in the western portion of the property and includes the woodland areas as well as the lawn area and landscape plantings around the existing home. There are several large, mature Tuliptree, White ash, and Red oak 3D" in diameter at breast height in this area of the property. The understory in this section is relatively open with a substantial amount of Sugar maple saplings present, with White ash and Hickory present as well. There are a large number of trees that would have a high value in a residential landscape setting. Invasive honeysuckle shrubs are present in scattered groupings in this section but currently have not formed large colonies as it is prone to do. This area would be classified as "young woodland" according to the City of Carmel Zoning Ordinance. Trees present in this area include: II Silvermaple (Acer saccharlnum) II Sugar maple (Acer saccharum) . Ohio buckeye (Aesculus glabra) . Bitternut hickory (Carya cordlformis) . Shagbark hickory (Carya ovata) . Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) II Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) . American beech (Fagus grand/folia) . White ash (Fraxinus amerlcana) II Black walnut (Juglans nigra) II Tuliptree (Liriodendron tuliplfera) II Apple (Malus spp.) . White mulberry (Morus alba) II White pine (Pinus strobus) . Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris) II Black cherry (Prunus serotina) II Bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) II Red oak (Quercus rubra) II Baldcypress ( Taxodium distichum) II Red elm (Ulmus rubra) Section B: Eastern Portion of Woodland This area in the eastern portion of the property and is entirely wooded, with many mature trees are present in this area including Tuliptree and Black walnut. The northeast corner of the property is dominated by Black cherry and Maple growth. There are several areas in this section where a thick growth of Euonymus groundcover has overtaken large areas of the ground layer. A number of trees in this section would have a high value in a residential landscape setting. Scattered areas of the invasive Multiflora rose are present in this section's understory. This area would be classified as "young woodland" according to the City of Carmel Zoning Ordinance. Trees present in this area include: . Boxelder (Acer negundo) II Silvermaple (Acer saccharinum) II Sugar maple (Acer saccharum) II Hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana) . Bitternut hickory (Carya cord/formis) o Hackberry (Celtis oCCldentalis) II Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) II American beech (Fagus grandifolia) o White ash (Fraxinus americana) . Section C: Disturbed Area in Eastern Woodland This area located in the central portion of the property and is dominated by White ash and Silver maple. A small clearing is located in the southern portion of this section and is bordered by thick Multiflora rose growth that is very prevalent in this area. There are areas of very dense understory shrub growth of Spicebush, Honeysuckle, and Multiflora rose that form thick groupings especially around the clearing in this section where the canopy is more open. The majority of this area appears to be a low area on the property and may hold water during the wet months of the year. This area provides a habitat for local wildlife. This area would be classified as "young woodland" according to the City of Carmel Zoning Ordinance. Trees present in this area include: \P Boxelder (Acer negundo) . Silvermaple (Acer saccharinum) . Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) . Gray dogwood (Camus racemasa) . White ash (Fraxinus americana) o White mulberry (Morus alba) . Black cherry (Prunus seratina) Discussion This property is nearly entirely wooded with an area of turfgrass surrounding the existing residence in the southwest corner of the property. There are many mature trees on this property that are worthy of preservation and would benefit the future development of the land. Section A is a wooded area with a small area of turfgrass surrounding the existing home located in this section. There are many large, mature trees in this section which includes many Tuliptree, Sugar maple, White ash, and Oak. This area provides a habitat for the variety of wildlife present in the area.
