Statement of Special Use
Hazel Dell Christian Church is requesting a Special Use variance to use four
temporary modular classrooms for up to two years. We are in the process of
designing and building the 16,000 square foot second phase of our master
plan, which will consist entirely of classrooms. Our adult and children's
study groups have outgrown our present facility. Due to financial
limitations, and our desire to pay cash for this addition, we cannot begin
constnlction for 6 to 18 months.

Statement of Support
The Technical Advisory Committee has found that there will be no adverse
effects on water, storm or sanitary sewage, fire, police or traffic flow in
granting Hazel Dell Christian Church a Special Use variance for the use of
temporary modular classrooms. Temporary use for up to four temporary
classrooms is needed for a maximum of two years while expanding our"
present facility with a 16,000 square foot expansion.

I HAZEL DELL CHRISTIAN CHURCH I
For the close-knit congregation of
Hazel Dell Christian Church, the
focus of the new millennium revolves
around growth. In that spirit, the
church community recently moved
into their new home-a flexible new
facility to house the projected future
membership of2,500.
Though an addition had been built
in 1990, it quickly became obvious
the congregation's vision of outreach
to the community would require a
new facility. ]n ] 998, the Hazel Dell
Building Committee selected
Schmidt Associates to develop a
master plan for phased gro\\-1:h.
"Schmidt Associates seemed to be
the perfect fit for us," explains Mark
Wright, Senior Pastor of the church.
"We were drawn to their folks
because of their willingness to
listen and to keep liS involved every
step of the way."
Subsequent meetings between the
design team and congregation vvere
held to gather input and to develop
a list of priorities.

Estahlished in 1968 a,> a traditional
place of worship with an elderly mem-
bership, today's services are geared
mainly to young families wanting to
minister to others. Members of Hazel
Dell \'v'anted a facility that would
allow (<)r immediate growth with po-
tential for expansion, emphasizing on
several ministries offered through the
church. "The process \vas very posi-
tive," slates Pastor Wright. "It was ex-
hilarating. It got our people fired up!"
In May 2000-ahead of schedule
and under budget-the new Hazel
Dell Christian Church was
christened by its members.
"The ScriPture stone in the
from of rhe church indicates
that this is a place of rrwh. "
-Mark Wrighr. S"nior Pasror-
Services are now held in a 600-seat
sanctuary that features a stage and a
sound/lighting booth to accommodate
the church's emphasis on
contemporary \vorship music. A full-

ilmnersion baptistry located at the front
of the sanctuary signifies the church's
willingness to welcome ne\.\,' members.
Beyond the sanctuary, the Christian
Education WIng houses 12
classrooms, providing ample space
for both adult and youth programs.
The adjacent nursery is stam~d hy
church volunteers during services
and other church functions.
The new facility-totaling 33,500
square feet-also features
administrative offices, a small
gymnasium, and a kitchen. "Every
space is used in two to three different
ways," says Pastor Wright.
"The 'finished product' really is so
flexible and functional." According
to Pastor Wright, it supports the
con!:,'Tegation's mission three ways:
"The Scripture stone in the front of
the church indicates that this is a place
of truth. The cross on the presiding
wall testifies to the fact that this is a
unique place of grace, The empty
chairs inside the sanctuary indicate
that this is a place of opportunity." .I.
