HomeMy WebLinkAbout02200 (Missing from Spec)Site Preparation 4/08 02200 - 1 SECTION 02200 SITE PREPARATION PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 SUMMARY (NOTE: This Complete Section is applicable only if the corresponding drawings indicate the scope to be present. In the case of a “Pad Only” site, items listed in Bold Italics in Section 1.01 and their corresponding items throughout this spec section (no font format) apply. A. Section Includes: 1. Furnish and install: a. Tree and site improvement protection materials. b. Erosion, siltation, and dust control materials. B. Perform the following: 1. Erosion control: a. Preparation and filing of erosion control plan (if required by local ordinance). b. Temporary erosion, siltation, and dust control. 2. Temporary protection of items designated to remain: a. Existing trees, vegetation, landscaping materials, including trimming as recommended by an arborist for protection during construction activities. b. Site improvements, adjacent property, structures, benchmarks, and monuments. 3. Temporary relocation , and site improvements scheduled for reuse. 4. Clearing and grubbing of stumps, vegetation, debris, rubbish, designated trees, and site improvements. 5. Topsoil stripping and stockpiling. 6. Removal and legal disposal of cleared materials. 7. Contractor to verify local requirements prior to submission of bid. 1.03 DEFINITIONS A. Topsoil: Natural or cultivated surface-soil layer containing organic matter and sand, silt, and clay particles; friable, pervious, and black or a darker shade of brown, gray, or red than underlying subsoil; reasonably free of subsoil, clay lumps, gravel, and other objects more than 2 inches in diameter; and free of subsoil and weeds, roots, toxic materials, or other non-soil materials. Tree Protection Zone: Area surrounding individual trees or groups of trees to be protected during construction, and defined by the drip line of individual trees or the perimeter drip line of groups of trees, unless otherwise indicated. 1.04 SUBMITTALS A. Photographs or videotape, sufficiently detailed, of existing conditions of trees and plantings, adjoining construction, and site improvements that might be misconstrued as damage caused by site clearing. 1.05 PROJECT/SITE CONDITIONS A. Environmental Requirements: Prepare and file erosion control plan if required by State and Local authorities. B. Adjoining Property: Do not proceed with work on adjoining property until directed by Owner Representative or that party having authority over the adjoining property. C. Hazardous Operations: Do not perform on-site burning or use explosives in execution of work. D. Traffic: Ensure minimum interference with roads, streets, walks, other adjacent occupied or used facilities. Do not close or obstruct without permission from authorities having jurisdiction. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 MATERIALS A. Not specifically described but required for proper completion of work to be selected by Contractor subject to acceptance of Owner Representative. B. Except for stripped topsoil or other materials indicated to remain Owner’s property, cleared materials shall become Contractor’s property and shall be removed from Project site. Items of significant monetary, historic or other intrinsic value shall be delivered to the Owner’s Representative, who will in turn present it to the proper and rightful owner. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION A. Prior to commencing work, carefully inspect and verify that work is complete to point where this operation may properly commence. B. Do not commence site clearing operations until temporary erosion and sedimentation control measures are in place. 3.02 PREPARATION A. Sequencing: 1. Schedule work with necessary consideration for neighbors and public. Site Preparation 4/08 02200 - 3 2. Avoid interference with use of, passage to and from, occupied portions of building and adjacent buildings and facilities. B. Notification: Notify Owner Representative at least 2 full working days prior to commencing work at site. C. Protection: 1. Inspection: Drawings do not purport to show all objects existing on site. Before commencing work: a. Carefully inspect entire area. b. Verify with Owner and flag all objects to be removed and preserved or relocated. c. Remove objects designated to be removed and preserved or relocated. 2. Erosion Control: Prevent erosion, siltation or spread of dust during performance of work: a. Place erosion control materials to prevent siltation either to adjacent property or within the boundaries of the site. b. Shape exposed soil areas to permit runoff with minimal erosion. c. Thoroughly moisten surfaces as required to prevent dust nuisance to occupants of existing building, public, neighboring buildings, and concurrent performance of other work on site. d. Install safeguards to prevent water pollution from haul roads, work platforms, or other temporary construction facilities. e. Inspect, repair, and maintain erosion and sedimentation control measures during construction until permanent vegetation has been established. f. Failure to comply with established erosion control measures will result in withholding of progress payments. 3. Trees and shrubbery to remain or to be relocated: a. Contractor is responsible for protection against damage or injury of existing trees and shrubs on site and on adjoining properties. b. Do not store construction materials, debris, or excavated material within tree protection zones. c. Maintain protection zone free of weeds and trash. d. Trimming: Carefully cut branches and roots of trees to remain, where such branches and roots interfere with new construction. 4. Existing Improvements: Prevent damage to existing improvements indicated to remain in place. Protect improvements on adjoining properties and on Owner's property. Restore damaged improvements to original condition as acceptable to parties having jurisdiction. 5. Existing Piping or Utilities: a. Contact for location. Determine requirements for disconnecting, capping and protection. Repair damaged utilities or piping at no cost to Owner. b. Before starting site operations, disconnect or arrange for disconnection of utility services designated to be removed in accordance with requirements of utility company or agency. c. Preserve in operating condition active utilities traversing site and designated to remain. 3.03 RELOCATION OF ITEMS TO BE REUSED A. Temporarily relocate items to be reinstalled; at location provided by Owner Representative. 3.04 CLEARING AND REMOVAL A. Trees, Shrubs, Other Vegetation: 1. Site: Clear site, except for those plantings indicated to be left standing. Remove stumps and roots to depth of at least 2 feet below final finish grade elevation indicated on Drawings, and other debris protruding through ground surface. 2. Use hand methods for grubbing inside protection zone of trees to be left standing. Site Preparation 02200 - 4 4/08 3. Remove trees, bushes, shrubs, sod, within lines of new building, walks, parking areas, drives, otherwise, where affected by regrading or where indicated on Drawings. 4. Completely remove stumps and roots 1 inch or larger in diameter occurring within lines of new improvements and to 5 feet beyond building walls. B. Site Improvements: 1. Demolish, remove concrete curbs, walks, slabs, retaining walls (including footings and foundations), bituminous pavement and other improvements designated or necessary to be removed. 2. Unless existing full-depth joints coincide with line of demolition, neatly saw-cut length of existing pavement to remain before removing existing pavement. Saw-cut faces vertically. 3. Paint cut ends of steel reinforcement in concrete to remain to prevent corrosion. 3.05 TOPSOIL A. General Requirements: 1. Remove sod and grass before stripping topsoil. 2. Strip topsoil from areas of construction and where grades are to be changed. 3. Stockpile as indicated or directed. Cover to prevent windblown dust. B. Filling: Fill depressions caused by clearing and grubbing with satisfactory soil material unless further excavation or earthwork is indicated. Place fill material in horizontal layers not exceeding 6-inch loose depth; thoroughly compact to density equal to adjacent original ground. 3.06 ADJUSTING A. Restore all plant, equipment, or other supplementary operation sites to prevent siltation and erosion. B. Repair any offsite damage resulting from failure to install or maintain erosion control measures. 3.07 DISPOSAL OF WASTE MATERIALS A. Remove waste materials, unsuitable and excess topsoil, from Owner's property. Dispose off site in legal manner. END OF SECTION
