This sign is only allowed because it's already in existence. Any modifications other than updating paint or sign face will require the sign be updated to present day standards which would require the sign to be replaced. In order for this sign to be acceptable, it must be refurbished, cabinet box painted so it does not show wear or age and must be maintained to remain in good aesthetic integrity for the life of the business.
