Seedbed Preparation for Permanent Seeding
1.Test soil to determine pH and nutrient levels. (Contact you county SWCD or Cooperative Extension office for assistance
and soils information, including available testing services.)
2.If soil pH is unsuitable for the species to be seeded, apply lime according to test recommendations.
3.
Fertilize as recommended by the soil test. If testing was not done, consider applying 400-600 lbs./acre of 12-0-12
analysis, or equivalent, fertilizer. Do not use phosphorous containing fertilizer (12-12-12) unless soil tests show a
phosphorous deficency.
4.Till the soil to obtain a uniform seedbed, working the fertilizer and lime into the soil 2-4 in. deep with a disk or rake
operated across the slope.
Rule 5 requires all disturbed areas likely to be idle for 15 day shall have surface stabilization applied. When weather conditions
prevent rapid germination of grass, then 2t/ac mulch will be used to ensure ground stabilization requirements are met.

This component is on till plains, till plains. The parent material consists of loess over loamy till. Depth to a root restrictive layer, densic
material, is 24 to 40 inches. The natural drainage class is moderately well drained. Water movement in the most restrictive layer is low.
Available water to a depth of 60 inches(or restricted depth) is low. Shrink-well potential is low. The soil is not flooded. It is not
ponded. A seasonal zone of water saturation is at 30 inches during January, February, March, April, December. Organic matter content
in the surface horizon is about 2%. This component is in the F111XA09IN Till Ridge ecological site. Nonirrigated land capability is 2e.
This soil does not meet hydric criteria. The calcium carbonate equivalent within 40 inches, typically, does not exceed 33%.

The Shoals, frequent, brief component makes up 60 percent of the map unit. Slopes are 0 to 2 percent. This component is on flood

natural drainage class is somewhat poorly drained. Water movement in the most restrictive layer is moderately high. Available water to
