7. State explanation of requested Developmental Standards Variance: (State what you want to
do and ci"te the. section number(s) of the Carmel/Clay Zoning Ordinance which applies and/or
crea"tes the need for this request).
A. Carmel Clay Schools as part of the Project would like to construct a building
identification sign with changeable copy in excess of the size limitations and overall
height taller than required by Section 25.7.02-5 of the Carmel/Clay Zoning
Ordinance.
8. State reasons supporting the Developmental Standards Variance:
A: The proposed size of the building identification and changeable copy sign is required
to provide space appropriate to announce and inform patrons of events scheduled at
the school. The proposed size will allow the announcements to be legible by
vehicles co'ming to or passing the Project site. The. proposed size of 36 square feet
is within the total allowable area for both changeable copy and institutional signag~
of 46 square feet. The changeable copy area of 24 square feet exceeds the
allowable of 16 square feet. Due to the height needed for the lettering, the overall
height of the proposed sign' of 6'-2" exceeds the allowable height Of 5'-0". The
overages noted are very close to the ordinance requirements, and would not
negatively impact the area, while providing legible copy for patrons.

FINDINGS OF FACT - DEVELOPMENTAL STANDARDS VARIANCE
1. The approval of this variance will not be injurious to the public' health, safety, morals and
general welfare of the community because: .
The size of the signage is appropriate far the frontage and overall size of the site and
building.
2. The use and value of the area adjacent to the property included in the variance will not be
affected in a substantially adverse manner because: .
The signage will be kept as low in height as practical. There is no specific design theme for
the directional signage. They only provide enough space for the required directional text.
There will not be any lighting included at the signage eliminating potential glare issues at
adjacent properties.
3. The strict application of the terms of the Zoning Ordinance to the property will result in
practical difficulties in the use of the property because:
The size limitations of the building identification sign would prohibit the signage that is legible
from passin.g vehicles at a distance. There are typically multiple events scheduled at the
school that need to be announced to patrons. The strict applicatjon df the size limitations
would greatly limit the ability of the school to fully inform patrons.

Dear Mr. Lillig:
We are providing this additional information. in response to your correspondence of October 24, 2002.
1. Modify Item 70fthe Developmental Standards Variance Application to include Item 8, as follows:
B. Carmel Clay Schools, . as part of the Project, would like to construct a building
identification sign in addi.tion to the existing building identification sign and to therefore,
provide two institutional ~igns where' only one institutional sign is allciwed in
Section 25.7.02-5 (B) of the Carmel Clay Zoning Ordinance.
2. Modi.fy Item 14 of the Developmental Standards and Variance Application form' as follows:
Docket number SV 17-91 Sign Variance Application was heard and approved at the Carmel
Board of Zoning Appeals meeting of March 25, 1991. This variance was from
Section 25.7.03-2A.iii which established 30 sql,Jare feet as the maximum allowable sign area for
institutional signs. This variance allowed the petitioner to erect a wall sign that is 60 feet in area
(One and a half feet times 40 .reet). This variance was heard and unanimously approved by all
board members. .
3. There is one existing identification sign presently at this site. It is the sign indicated in Item 2
above. .
