The size of the signage is appropriate for the overall size of the site, and is similar to existing
signs on the Carmel High School campus. The directional traffic signage needs to be legible
to provide important directional information" for the community. This directional signage does
not have ari'egative impact on the community. "

_ Carmel Clay Schools. would like to construct traffic directional" signage . at three locations,
Signs A, B, and C, in excess of the size limitations. required by Section 25.7.01-2 of the
Carmel Clay Zoning Ordinance.
8.
State reasons supporting the Development Standards Variance:
The size of the directional traffic signage is required to provide legible information to direct
. patrons, visitors,buses and "service vehicles to the appropriate locatIons on the Project site.
With the size of the Project site and the eXIsting buildIng, the directional signage is extremely
critical in directing vehic:ular traffic to the praper location to avoid potential conflicts b~tvveen"
different vehicles. The directional traffic signage proposed is within the size parameters of
existing directional signage on the Carmel High School campus.

High School. 'The proposed signs are lettering without specific desIgns or s'peciallighting
effects. These signs would not adversely affect adjacent properties.

practical difficulties in the use of the property because: '
Without the ad9itionalsignage, areas of the building- would not be id,entifiable for patrons
or viSitors ap'proaching the building., A building of this size and scope requires area~ and
entrances to be identifiable from the exterior. The signs will allow users to find parking
area near' the entrance .they aesire,and to avoid traveling through the building to reach .
specific areas. The various signs will also assist building. administration' with security
issues by directing patrons and visitors to specific entrances that can be supervised. All
'other entrances are typically inaccessible from the exterior in an educational facility.
Previous approved variances ,for the Carmel High School campus have supported these
issues and ailowed multiple institutional signage to be erected on the tampus.

7. - State explanation of requested Developmental Standards Variance: (State what you -
want to do and- city the section number(s) of the Carmel/Clay Zoning Ordinance which
applies and/or creates the need for this request)..
CarmeL Clay Schools would like to incorporate three institutional signs into the proposed
Freshman Center Project and on the Carmel High School campus. -The three
institutional signs would include two wall-mounted signs and one ground sign. The total
number of signs would exceed the requirements of Section 25.7.02-5 'of the Carmel/Clay
Zoning Ordinance. -
Existing institutional signs approved by a previous variance'request will. remain in the
current locations. One of the existing signs will be relocated to the new northwest
entrance of the Freshman Center.
8. State reasons supportIng the Development Standards Variance: -
The Freshman Center portion of this Project will include its own main entrance and
- requires identification. within the larger building complex. The basic concept of creating
the Freshman Center on the high school site was to maintain an identity on the campus.
The'design of. the building assists in that regard, but the signage proposed for this
Project is also an important element of this separate identity concept.
A wall sign made up of individual letters indicating "Freshman Center" is proposed on the
west fagade of the Freshman Center to idEmtifythis area in a manner similar to other.
portions of the high school campus that have wall signs. The addition of this sign would
be consistent with the existing signage on the building and campus.
A ground sign with changeable, copy is- also proposed to further provide identification to
.the Freshman Center area 'and .provide ,a place to announce events to patrons and
visitors. This is critical to again help separate and give identity to the Freshman Center.
ThIS ground sign is similar to the existing sign along Main Street where events planned.
for Carmel High Scho?1 can be noted.
A wall sign is also proposed, for the new ticket building at the soccer stadium. This wall
. sign made up ofindividualletters indicates "Brian Murray Stadium", This sign is needed
to identify another feature of the high school campus that attracts patrons and visitors, It
further identifies an important figure to Carmel High School who has been honored with
tre naming of the soccer facility.
All signs are needed to identify ~pecific parts of a larg.e campus and building. The signs
, will assist patrons -and visitors attending functions atthe school to find those areas and
'enter at the appropriate. locations. Patrons and visitors are only allowed to access the
building at specifjclocations for security reasons, and the signage further identifies those
areas to avoid confusion and - potential security concerns. . .

changeable copy area requirements of Section 25.7.02-5 of the Carmel/Clay Zoning
Ordinance. ,
8. ' State reasons supporting the Development Standards Variance:
The proposed ground sign height' and changeable copy area ,is required to, provide
appropriate space to identify the Freshman Center' and announce a'nd inform patrons of
events scheduled at the Freshman Center. The proposed size is consistent with the existing
ground sign along Main Street at Carmel High School, and other ground signs proposed for
Carmel.Clay School buildings. ' '
The changeable copy area size will allow the announcements to be legible by vehicles
traveling along the interior circulatiori routes. The changeable 'copy, area proposed is
24 square feeUn lieu of the required 16 square feet: The ove.rallsize of the sign does not
exceed the overall size allowed fol"' a combination of institutional sign and changeabl~ copy
signage.
The larger changeable copy area and letter size required for the sign pushes the overall
height to 6 feet - :2 inches or 1 foot - 2 inches above the maximum ground sign height
requirement.
Carmel Clay Scho.ols feels it is important for the identity ofthe Freshman Center to have this
, ground sign to signify a different area of the campus and identify specific events planned for
. this area.

The overall building heights are dictated by the required size of the additions h support the
increased student population and the functions included within the additions. Keeping the
building .additions compact and.near the existing building will minimize the visual impact of
the addition on adjacent properties. .
The proposed additions are also similar in height to other portions of the existing building and
. will be below the highest portion of the' existing building.
2. The use 8t)d value of the area adjacent to the property included in the variance will not be
affected in a substantially adverse manner because: '
The main buiidingadditions. along the northwest 'remain approximately 280 feet, from
adjacent properties at the. c,losest point. This is a greater distance than the current
configuration. Currently, t~ere is an area betwe~n 190 and 260 feet from the existing
building to adjacent properties. This separation will help minimize the visual impact of the
three-story addition.. The hetght, of the building. will improve visu?l screening. and sound
screening of roof-mounted meChanical equipment currently open to the adjacent properties.

practical difficulties in the use of the property because:
The strict application of the Zoning Ordinance would greatly increase the building footprint
,supporting a student capacity desired for this Project. This increase in bullding footprint
would not fit within the property owned by Carmel Clay Schools. The strict application of the
Zoning. Ordinance would also reduce functionality of some spaces in the building program.

Carmel Clay Schools wouid like to construct additions to the ,existing Carmel High School
where the height exceeds the ordinance requirement stated in Section 8.4 of the Cannel.
ClayZoning Ordinance
'8. State reasons supporting the Devel;pment Standards Variance:
The size of the' proposed additions is based on the projected student enrollment anticipated
'in the future for Carmel High' School. The limitations of the Project site and desire to
maintain a compact floor'plan for the building additions requires a niulti-story building for the
main, builging ,~ddition. The height of the major portion of this addition,is 44 feet -,0 inches,
with a mechanical enclosure extending to 57 feet - 0 inches. ,This three-story addition is
similar in height to the three-story portion of the existing building on the w'est side of the
Carmel High School. The height of this existing portion of the building is 48 feet The
proposed addition will not be the highest building element on the high school ca'mpus. The
