Lopez tania.e.lopez@indystar_com Robert Lebow has bought a Little bit of his Downtown Indianapolis antique shop to Carmel. , Lebow, 61, has opened Midland Arts and Antiques Market west of Range Line Road off Carmel Drive in a 12,000- square-foot former school. Vendors feature their items in booths - unlike Lebow's 40,OOO-square-foot flagship store in Downtown Indianapo- lis - so customers can put each piece into context on how they would fit in their spaces, he said. "Because of the gallery settings, it could be more design driven," said Le- bow. "What we've done is try to com- bine new and ald." One booth, with items from Indian- apolis-based interior designer Debra Maley, sits next to a Ruschman Art Gal- lery booth that features works of local contemporary artists. Lebow said the mix is what he envi- sioned for the Downtown location when he first opened it about 15 years ago, but the idea of art with antiques never took off. "It was hard to get people to concep- tualize it," he said. Another reason the setup is different in Carmel is because, Lebow said, cus- tomers often look for something spe- cific whereas his clients Downtown are more collector-driven. "The shopper here is going to be looking for a specific piece so the booths here are much less congested so they can visualize it," he said. - Midland gets 6 percent of each sale, and vendors lease their space based on square footage. Cost for items ranges from $75,000 for a Queen Anne Chinoisserie circa 1800 - a piece of furniture that's the most expensive item in the store - to under $10 for small decorative items. "I have a real passion for this stuff," said Lebow, a physician who specializes in internal medicine. "To me the draw has always been the'history."
