I want to state my support for the cell tower to be built. I would think that Mr. Yde's concern can be ameliorated by having the tower finished so that it looks like a tree, as many are done now so that they blend into the surrounding environment. The so called safety concerns are a red herring, I believe. If Mr. Yde and group were truly concerned, I think they would take out their microwaves, quit using cell phones, not have wireless Internet, and not go into any stores that use RFID technology. I'm sure some of them called to voice concerns from their cell phones. I understand that there is an effort by our home owners association to fight the installation of a cellular transmission tower on the Towne Meadow School property. I wanted provide a different perspective in that I am in full support of this zoning variance and the installation of a cell tower. There is a great deal of misinformation being disseminated by many in the community as to the perceived hazard of a cell tower not unlike the high voltage power line scare of the early 1990's. Studies will be quoted which show an impact of long term exposure to low levels of electromagnetic radiation. What won't be referred to are follow-on studies which tried to validate these and were unsuccessful. Also, the level of radiation exposure from a cell tower is measured in micro-watts verses what were tested in many of these studies. I don't know what power is being proposed, but for suburban areas a 100 watt per channel effective radiated power (ERP) is common which produces a radiated power of 5 - 10 watts. The ground level densities near a typical tower are on the order of 1 micro-Watt/cm"2 or less. Where as the FCC exposure limit for the general public is 1000 micro-Watt/cm"2. And, this is assuming a relative close proximity to the transmitter which is not going to be the case and radiation levels decrease as a square of the distance which we all learned in high school physics. There is clearly a need for a cell tower in this area. I have tried Sprint, TMObile, Verizon, ATT Wireless and none of them can find a decent consistent signal. Our society is running much more on cellular technology and it is not unreasonable that at 106th and Town Road you could expect a decent signal. For a thorough discussion of the science and technology of radio transmission and exposure I would refer you to the FCC Document, "Questions and Answers about Biological Effects and Potential Hazards of Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields" published in August of 1999, http://www.fcc.gov/Bureaus/Engineering_Technology/DOCUmentsjbulletins/oet56/oet56e4.pdf. I realize that to this but I am not one. There is misinformation which isk to the children at the school however there is no factual to support such claims and I find this kind of fear we need this tower as cell phone service in this area is poor at best.
