It still says "PLACE SOIL BALL, ROOT FLARE, OR ROOT CROWN SLIGHTLY HIGHER THAN EXISTING GRADE, MOUND SOIL OVER BALL. Planting a tree too deeply is problem that we see regularly. It stresses most trees, leading to their decline and eventual death. Connected to this problem is the fact that most trees come from nurseries with the root flare (area where the trunk tissue becomes root tissue as the tree expands it's taper at it's base) already too deep in the soil ball that gets transported with the balled and burlapped tree. If we see that the root flare is exposed and planted at the correct height (grade level) then we can insure that the tree has achance to survive. If we plant the soil ball that the tree comes in from the nursery at grade level, and the root flare is already too deep (sometimes 4"-6"), and the tree will begin to decline. The note should say PLACE ROOT FLARE OR ROOT CROWN AT, OR SLIGHTLY HIGHER THAN EXISTING GRADE. That was the only issue that has not been ressolved. The plan should equal the design elements and materials built with Phase I. My comments area as follows: 1. The landscaping and street tree plantings along Veteran's Way and Monon Green Drive should match the landscaping currently existing in Phase I (Shapiro's Restaurant and pazking lot). Trees and other plant materials should be added to the plan to reflect the complete design. 2. The species of plant materials must be specified on the landscape plan, and a plant schedule provided. A plant schedule normally provides information such as common plant name, scientific name, type of planting stock, installed size of stock, etc. 3. No foundation or building landscaping is shown on the plans. Such landscaping should match the design of the existing Shapiro's building from Phase I, and needs to be shown on the plan and plant schedule. 4. The design of the street planters must match the existing planters in front of the Phase I building, included the removed block in the below ground portion of the planters, and the constructed soils under the sidewalk (see planter detail 21/C100). The species of plant material in the planters needs to be specified and shown on the plans. 5. An additional planting note should be added which states that any stakes and guy wires used to plant trees must be removed within one year. 6. The graphic tree planting detail (03-C700) note that specifies that the soil ball must be placed higher than existing grade needs to specify that the "root Haze" or "root crown" must be placed slightly high than existing grade.
