Plant material to be installed and maintained by a qualified and experienced landscape installer. 2. All materials are subject to the approval of the Landscape Architect and Owner at any time. Landscape Architect to inspect all plant locations and plant bed conditions prior to installation. Stake all plant locations for review and approval by the Landscape Architect before planting. On-site adjustments may be required. Plants are to be freshly dug. Transporting of plants shall be done in a manner as to not destroy the natural shape, compromise the health, or alter the characteristics of plant materials. 3. All plant beds shall receive 3" minimum of genuine shredded hardwood bark mulch (unless otherwise noted). Apply pre-emergent herbicide as directed by the manufacturer prior to installing mulch. The Contractor shall install and/or amend topsoil in all proposed bed areas to meet ASTM D5268 standards. Landscaper shall verify depth and quality of topsoil prior to plant installation. A minimum of 4" of topsoil is required for sodded areas; 12" for plant beds. Topsoil sources shall include the reuse of surface soil stockpiled on site, clean of roots, plants, sod, stones, clay lumps, and other extraneous or foreign materials larger than 1". Supplement with imported topsoil from off-site sources when quantities are insufficient. Do not obtain supplemental topsoil from agricultural land, bogs, or marshes. Inorganic amendments, organic amendments, and fertilizers shall be used to amend topsoil as needed for long-term plant health. 7. Verify all utility locations in the field prior to beginning work. Repair all damaged utilities to satisfaction of the Owner and Operating Authority at no additional cost. 8. Install all plant material in accordance with all local codes and ordinances. Coordinate with the Owner to obtain any required permits necessary to complete work. All workmanship and materials shall be guaranteed by the Contractor for a period of one (1) calendar year after Final Acceptance. 9. Maintain all plant material for a three (3) month period from date of Substantial Completion. Maintanenace shall include pruning, cultivating, watering, weeding, fertilizing, restoring plant saucers, spraying for disease and insects, and replacing tree wrappings. ENGINEERED SOIL MIX FOR INFILTRATION TREATMENT It is very important to minimize compaction within the limits of the infiltration area. When possible, use excavation hoes to remove original soil. If excavated using a loader, the excavator should use a wide track or marsh track equipment, or light equipment with turf type tires. Use of equipment with narrow tracks or narrow tires, rubber tires with large lugs, or high pressure tires will cause excessive compaction resulting in reduced infiltration rates and storage volumes and is not acceptable. Compaction will significantly contribute to design failure. Over excavate and rip compacted earth a minimum of 24-inches after rough grading. Then apply an even mix of in-situ (ripped) soil (50% by volume) with Engineered Soil Mix (50 % by volume) a minimum depth of 6-inches. Bring to final grade with an additional 6-inches (minimum) of Engineered Soil Mix. In situ soil should be removed and either used in rough grading (berms, etc.), used elsewhere on site or removed from site as part of the Contractor's responsibility. A. General 1. Engineered Soil Mix shall conform to all local, state and federal stormwater and health codes and ordinances. Engineered Soil Mix shall be tested prior to installation and/or use to document compliance with minimum stormwater management requirements or ability for stormwater treatment facility to drain all ponding water within 72 hours, whichever is more stringent. Compost is a widely used bulk organic soil amendment and a recycled product. Because it is applied at much greater rates than fertilizer, compost has a significant cumulative effect on nutrient availability and may reduce or eliminate initial fertilization. Consider each plant's pH and soluble salt requirements and how they relate to the compost being used and the resulting soil-compost mix. A. Compost: Well-composted, stable, and weed-free organic matter, pH range of 5.5 to 8; moisture content 35 to 55 percent by weight; 100 percent passing through 1-inch sieve; soluble salt content of 4 to 5 deciSiemens per meter (dS/m); not exceeding 0.5 percent inert contaminants and free of substances toxic to plantings; and as follows: Retain first subparagraph below if required. Organic matter content for compost affects application rate and may be as low as 30 or as high as 70 percent. Insert subparagraphs for other characteristics such as soluble salt content, water-holding capacity, bulk density, and nutrient content if required. 1. Organic Matter Content: 50 - 60 percent of dry weight. Compost may be produced from several feedstocks or raw materials. In subparagraph below, revise types of feedstocks if limiting sources. Revise descriptions and insert product names if required. 2. Feedstock: Agricultural, food, or industrial residuals; biosolids; yard trimmings; or source-separated or compostable mixed solid waste. B. Peat: Sphagnum peat moss, partially decomposed, finely divided or granular texture, with a pH range of 3.4 to 4.8. Retain paragraph above or first paragraph below if applicable. Retain above if sphagnum peat moss, an acidic peat, is required. Retain below if peat types with a neutral pH are required. C. Peat: Finely divided or granular texture, with a pH range of 6 to 7.5, containing partially decomposed moss peat, native peat, or reed-sedge peat and having a water-absorbing capacity of 1100 to 2000 percent. D. Wood Derivatives: Composted, nitrogen-treated sawdust, ground bark, or wood waste; of uniform texture, free of chips, stones, sticks, soil, or toxic materials. E. F. Tree and Shrub Leaves: Un-composted or composted shredded tree and shrub leaves.
