THIS GENTLY SLOPING, DEEP, WELL DRAINED SOIL IS ON
RISES ON TILL PLAINS AND ALONG DRAINAGEWAYS AND
STREAMS. IN A TYPICAL PROFILE THE SURFACE LAYER IS
DARK GRAYISH BROWN SILT LOAM ABOUT 7 INCHES
THICK. THE SUBSOIL IS DARK YELLOWISH BROWN AND
BROWN, FIRM CLAY LOAM ABOUT 23 INCHES THICK. THE
SUBSTRATUM, TO A DEPTH OF 60 INCHES, IS YELLOWISH
BROWN LOAM THAT CONTAINS FREE CARBONATES.
Br BROOKSTON SILTY CLAY LOAM.
THIS NEARLY LEVEL, DEEP, VERY POORLY DRAINED SOIL
IS IN BROAD DEPRESSIONS, SWALES, AND NARROW
DRAINAGEWAYS ON TILL PLAINS. IT IS PONDED BY
RUNOFF FROM HIGHER ADJACENT AREAS. IN A TYPICAL
PROFILE THE SURFACE LAYER IS VERY DARK GRAYISH
BROWN AND VERY DARK GRAY SILTY CLAY LOAM ABOUT
11 INCHES THICK. THE SUBSOIL EXTENDS TO A DEPTH
OF 58 INCHES AND IS DARK GRAY, GRAY, AND GRAYISH
BROWN, MOTTLED, FIRM CLAY LOAM AND LOAM. THE
SUBSTRATUM, TO A DEPTH OF 70 INCHES, IS BROWN
LOAM. IN SOME PLACES THE LOWER PART OF THE
SUBSOIL IS SANDY LOAM, LOAMY SAND, OR SANDY CLAY
LOAM.

1. INSTALL PARALLEL TO THE CONTOUR OF THE LAND.
2. EXTEND ENDS UPSLOPE TO ALLOW WATER TO POND BEHIND THE FENCE.
3. EXCAVATE A TRENCH 4 INCHES WIDE AND 8 INCHES DEEP.
4. INSTALL FENCE WITH STAKES ON THE DOWNSLOPE SIDE.
5. BURY 12 INCHES OF FABRIC IN THE TRENCH, EXTENDING THE BOTTOM 4 INCHES
TOWARD THE UPSLOPE SIDE.
6. BACKFILL TRENCH WITH SOIL MATERIAL AND COMPACT.
7. JOIN SILT FENCE SECTIONS BY OVERLAPPING SECTIONS AND NAILING WITH LATHE
TO THE NEAREST POINT.
8. INSPECT TWICE A WEEK AND AFTER EACH STORM EVENT, REPAIRING AS NEEDED AND
REMOVING SEDIMENT DEPOSITS WHEN THEY REACH ONE —HALF THE FENCE HEIGHT.
CONSTRUCTION ENTRANCE (WHERE APPLICABLE)
1. PLACE 6 INCHES OF COARSE AGGREGATE (NO.2) OVER A STABLE SUBGRADE.
2. CONSTRUCT THE DRIVE AT LEAST 12 FEET WIDE AND 50 FEET LONG (OR THE DISTANCE
TO THE FOUNDATION).
3. ADD STONE AS NEEDED TO MAINTAIN 6 INCHES OF CLEAN DEPTH.
4. TO IMPROVE STABILITY IF WET CONDITIONS ARE ANTICIPATED, PLACE GEOTEXTILE FABRIC
ON THE GRADED FOUNDATION.
