JAMES BRAINARD, MAYOR
Dear Traditions on the Monon Property Owner:
The City recently became aware that one of the townhouse owners along the Monon Trail
cleared away many of the adjacent trees and vegetation located between the retaining
wall and the trail.
Please understand that the area of trees and vegetation between the Monon Trail and the
retaining wall is part of a protected greenbelt that is owned by the City of Carmel. It is
the City's goal to maintain this area for environmental benefits and to act as a buffer
between the trail and property owners. Clearing or otherwise impacting this green belt
area by property owners or their contractors is a legal violation and is not permitted in
any way.
If there is a problem with the vegetation in the greenbelt, such as downed branches or
growth of noxious weeds (e.g. poison ivy, Canadian thistle) please contact the Carmel
Department of Community Services at 571 2423 to address the matter.
If any further clearing or mowing occurs in the greenbelt, the City will register a trespass
complaint against the violator, and assess the costs to replace the trees and vegetation as
well as attorney fees to the property owner.
Attached is a map which helps to identify the proximity of the protected greenbelt area.
If you have questions regarding the map or any of the above information, please do not
hesitate to contact me at 571 2422, or email mhollibaugh @carmel.in.gov.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Yours truly,
Michael Hollibaugh
