DEPARTMENT REPORT
June 1, 2010
1. Docket No. 10040018 ADLS Amend: Jiffy Lube Signage
The applicant seeks approval for three new wall signs. The site is located at 1495 Keystone Way E. Dr. and
is zoned B -8 within the Keystone Overlay District. Filed by Amanda Gates of Sign Craft Industries.
Jiffy Lube is going through a re- branding of all its locations right now. The Merchants Square location will be
painting the building to the new colors of tan, gray and red. The new colors are a great improvement over the
previous color scheme. There will be new information signs (5 of them) next to the garage bays that will be less
than three sq. ft. in area. The south elevation (where the cars enter the garage) will have a new 4' white filler panel
placed where the existing red stripe went above the garage bays. The existing red stripe with Jiffy Lube name over
the entry doors will be replaced with the new gray and maroon sign band. Petitioner, please confirm that the red
accent stripe will not be illuminated and inform us how the Jiffy Lube name will be illuminated. The Jiffy
Lube sign on this facade will be 15.09 sq. ft. 75 sq. ft. is allowed by the Sign Ordinance. The east elevation
proposes to take out the existing red panel around the building and replace it with a smaller Jiffy Lube panel in the
new maroon color as well as a white filler panel on the other side. The size of this sign is 13.06 sq. ft. 40 sq. ft. is
allowed. The north elevation proposes again to take out the existing red stripe along the roof of the building and
replace it with a white filler panel. A non illuminated wall sign will then be attached to the outside of the building.
This sign will be 30.13 sq. ft. 45 sq. ft. is allowed.
The issues with these sign proposals are that they are not the same for each elevation. The Department feels
that the same size white filler panels should be used on each elevation. A 4' panel is used on the south
elevation, whereas a 2' panel is used on the east and north. We feel that the 4' panel looks the best because it will
help to not divide up the awning/overhang as much as the existing 2' panel does. Also, if the new gray /maroon sign
panel is not going to be used on all the elevations, the Department feels the same sign should be used for the
east and north. Right now one is small and illuminated and the other is large and non illuminated.
After all questions and concerns are addressed, the Dept of Community Services (DOCS) recommends that
the Committee approves this item.
