Year Two Inspection Steps for Floatable Debris and Oil 901 -495 -3800 901 495 -8849 During Construction All Aqua Swirl'"' units should be inspected, and cleaned as needed, every month during construction. At the end of construction each unit is to be cleaned whether or not it has reached its maximum pollutant storage level. All Aqua- Swirl Units are to be inspected every six months and clean as needed. If the units are found to have pollutants in excess of the storage capacity more frequent inspection and cleanings are to be scheduled. After two years a maintenance schedule is to be developed based on the pollutant load recoded. Year Three and Subsequent Years All Aqua- Swirl' units are to be inspected in accordance to the schedule developed from the inspection records accumulated during the first two years of operation since the completion of construction activates. Notes: 1. All Aqua Swirl -1m units are to inspected and clean annually whether or not they have reached their maximum sediment storage capacity. 2. If bypass structures are present they should be included in Aqua -Swirl inspections. 3. Sanding of roadways during cold weather months will greatly increase the amount of sediments collected by the Aqua- Swirl units. Inspecting the Aqua- Swirl units in the spring time (March to April) will greatly decrease the chance that the sediment storage capacity of the units will be exceeded. 1. Remove manhole lid to expose liquid surface inside Aqua- Swirl unit. 2. Remove any floating debris with a net or similar mechanism. 3. Measure oil depth with an oil /water interface probe, a stadia rod with water phylic paste, a coliwasa, or by simply collecting a representative sample with a jar attached to a rod. If the oils depth is equal to 1/2" or greater clean the liquids from the unit. All liquids are to be removed by means of a 'Vactor Truck" or similar means (see Cleaning figure 3). Note: Water in an Aqua- Swirl' can appear black like oil due to the dark body of the surrounding structure. Oil appears darker than water in the system and is usually accompanied by debris (e.g. Styrofoam, etc.) with obvious signs of oil stains 2 Inspection Items (continued) 1. Remove manhole lid to expose liquid surface inside Aqua Swirl'"' unit. 2. Lower measuring device (i.e. stadia rod) into Aqua Swirl'"' through service access provided. See Figure 1. 3. Make measurements as follows. (a) Depth to top of liquids 01). (b) Depth to top of sediments D2). 4. If the distance from the liquid surface to the sediment is 30" or less, (D2 01 30 the unit will require cleaning (see Unit Cleaning, figure 3). 1. Inspect bypass weir or other structure for decay or damage. Weirs are more susceptible to damage than off -set piping and should be checked to confirm that they are not crumbling, in the case of concrete or brick weirs, or decaying if a steel weir was used. 2. Inspect diversion structure and by -pass piping for signs of structural damage or blockage from debris or sediment accumulation. 3. Measure elevations on diversion weir or piping to ensure it is consistent with site plan design. 4. Inspect downstream structure in diversion system for signs of blockage or structural failure. 5. Signs of decay or system failure are to be brought to the attention of the unit owner. 6. Repairs of non functioning units are to be conducted in a timely manner. Cleaning 1. Call a local vactor company to remove sediments, oil, and other floatable pollutants with a vactor. 2. Dispose of all waste in accordance with all applicable requirements. Note: Inspection Steps for Sediments Inspection Steps for Bypass Structures 1. High levels of oils and other hydrocarbons mixed with the liquid collected in the units may be considers "Hazardous" materials and must be disposed of at a facility approved for such materials. Record Keeping III Site owner is to keep maintenance and inspection records of all Aqua Swir'" units. The Activity Log provided in this manual is to be completed any time that an Aqua Swirl is inspected or has maintenance work performed. All records shall be accessible to jurisdictional agencies upon request.
