We believe this is the most cost effective, energy- efficient and environmentally responsible way to handle municipal waste for many reasons: saves residents money reduces the number of garbage trucks driving through our neighborhoods leads to safer streets and cleaner air for our children saves fuel and reduces carbon emissions reduces the wear and tear on our roads and saves taxpayer dollars beautifies our neighborhoods by having just ONE day when houses put out their trash promotes environmentally responsible recycling and reuse of our resources We posted an online survey back in August 1, 2009 asking the simple question "Do you favor city -wide curbside recycling The survey also included required fields for name, address and email, and an optional field for comments. We also included a note that said: Please note: only residents inside the City limits of Carmel are eligible to participate. Southwest Clay residents are eligible as they will be part of the City in 2010. And on Feb 17 we included an additional note that said: The results of this survey will be shared with our elected officials. If you would not like to be included, please contact Leslie at 440 -4017. Yesterday and today we made a concerted effort to ask people to Vote YES on our online poll and as of 2 pm this afternoon, we have received 299 in favor and 9 opposed. And the votes keep coming in. However, we do have some duplicate entries, and some which did not include their full name, address, email. We will review the results and remove duplicate and incomplete entries. In the next few weeks we will submit a report to the council. In the meantime, attached are a few excepts of the YES VOTES and NO VOTES we received yesterday and today as of 2 p.m. for your review. JENNIFER hANDS 11214 N WESTFIELD BLVD LILYUMA @LIVE.CO M I think it is behind the times to NOT have recycling and I believe that the size of bin should be a large bin for recycling, a smaller size for landfill and a small bin for composting as well would be a good idea. The recycling service should pick up every week not just every other week. Thanks. Monte Spence 3138 Wildman Lane mnkspence @hotmai I.com I further commend efforts to ensure all residents have curbside recycling via the city through this service. I believe that charging consumers under the current conditions are a deterrent to recycling. I only see approx 20% of the homes in our community participating with bi- weekly recycling efforts. CARMEL GREEN INITIATIVE working torether for a greener tomorrow ONLINE POLL: Do you favor city -wide curbside recycling? Excerpt of YES VOTES from March 6 and March 7, 2011, 2 p.m. Carrie Bressers 22 Albert CL carrie @bress.net Please get this done soon! It would be so nice to have everyone both a) recycling and b) have neighborhoods on a schedule so we don't have garbage out every day of the week! Many, many thanks! Angie Conn 1 civic sq, carmel, in 46032 aconn @carmel.in.go v curbside recycling should be free, and there should be a fee per actual trash bag, perhaps a per bag fee, and that would make people sort their trash and be more apt to recycle. i think the city of bloomingon, indiana does something similar.... Charles Hook 750 N Rangeline Rd travelguidel @indy.rr .com this would be a great addition to the North Rangeline Road recycle center which we use several times a week and would allow my 12 yr old to be more "involved" with recycling in Ross Springer 10618 106th Place, Carmel, IN 46033 rossrosiespringer@ msn.com This must be both city -wide curb side trash and recycling services. Item 1 above only says recycling. Karl J. Niemiec 3531 Rolling Springs Drive kjn @laptoppublishin g.com City-wide curbside recycling is: One small recycling step for man. One giant green step for mankind. Winston Long 12316 Brookshire Pkwy winston @omniprodu ctions.com Thanks for the opportunity to save us all some money on a much needed service. I know there may be a very small group of citizens who may not use recycling and /or conventional trash pickup services, but the vast majority of Carmel utilizes one of the trash companies at a greater expense than can be realized through the City wide purchasing leverage. I do not consider it to be a tax as it is a service we need and are presently paying for each quarter. I applaud the City in its effort to save its citizens money! Thanks Josh Bressers 22 Albert Ct. josh @bress.net This is a good idea for the city. It will certainly reduce overall emissions from the trucks, and will help prevent having a different garbage truck drive down the street every day. Cecil and Susan Salter 12856 Limberlost Dr sbf5salter @att.net There are so many positive aspects to having a city-wide trash pick -up, I cannot imagine anyone voting against it. Besides all the important reasons listed, just think how nice to have trash cans out on the street only one day a week, vs several days to accomodate all the different companies schedules! This one is a no- brainer. Kevin Heber 557 Village Drive kevin @hebers.net Get with the program, Carmel! Lisa L. Wichser Jones 3608 Twin Springs Drive, Carmel, IN 46033 LisaLWJones @yaho o.com Definitely YES Let's unify, simply, and make garbage collection and recycling more efficient, streamlined, economical, and environmentally pleasing! THANK YOU Lisa L. Wichser Jones Armando R. Irizarry 11902 Somerset Way South, Carmel, IN irizarryar @lilly.com I do support city wide recycling efforts. It is an additional benefit if it reduces the cost of the trash service. Shane Best 12461 Windbush Way sbest @collegenetwo rk.com Please please give us citywide recycling if not for us then for our kids! J. Albright 637 Emerson RD jo.albright @att.net If this would be less expensive then our individual trash collections, I am in favor. Also, it would be better to have just one trash day instead of trash cans sitting out every day. Ashley Williams 2000 Rhettsbury St., Carmel, IN 46032 ashmar117 @gmail.c om I would love to have curbside recycling! I currently have to drive my recycling to a drop -off site, which is really inconvenient! I hope you have cardboard recycing as well. iq rfiell/YI6 (3) Rae Hopkins 14528 Saddleback Drive raeshop @att.net We had free curbside recycling 25 years ago in California and think Indiana is way behind in providing recycling! Obviously, we have been paying for it for years and think that many more people would participate if it is provided by the city. If Carmel wants to be presented as a green city, this service is absolutely necessary. Todd Cunningham 12322 Brookshire Pkwy todd @tdc66.com I am in favor of city -wide curbside recycling and also Carmel's proposed trash service thru Republic since they have the best rate. Benjamin Taylor 12207 Crestwood Drive brookshire @benandj eri.com I am for this on all fronts, especially reducing the number of trucks in the neighborhood. Kathy Smart 12060 Somerset Way East asmart6 @att.net The question above asked for curbside recycling, however my understanding is the proposed cost covers trash and recyling. Is this correct/ Layla Spanenberg 931 Twelve Oaks 1panenberg @indy.rr .com I just received my Republic bill for 3 months of service, trash and recycling. It is $110.00, and does not include all the "Extra's" that are being proposed. This is a win /win for the city and consumer. Loretta Horton 148 Pineview Dr Apt 6 Iamb612000 @yahoo .com We definitely need some sort of city -wide recycling program. This would be great! Carmel Drive 4603 vanhouten5 @aol.co m I would also like to see recycling collected EVERY week, as a majority of our trash can be recycled and the container fills up too fast for every other week collection. Sharron Wright 12025 Somerset Way E, Carmel 46033 wrightfamily @indy.rr. com Please support this initiative! Not only will it reduce our monthly costs with no new taxes, it will finally alleviate the huge safety concern of garbage trucks barreling through our neighborhoods three to four times per week, especially while our children are outside. With one garbage service (like that enjoyed by our Indianapolis neighbors), the trucks must slow down and stop at every house on the block. We can finally take walks through our neighborhood without dodging trash cans every day of the week, making our neighborhoods look that much nicer. THANK YOU for taking steps to improve our Richard Feldt 12035 Somerset Way E rlfeldt @msn.com The savings to the Carmel ecoinomy are huge. We will have no choices. I have lived in several cities with both forms of refuse service. Those that the city controls, either directly or through private contractors, had poorer service, were more expensive (the inital rate in the current proposal is not gauranteed to contiune), and were unresponive to the public. There has been little or no public disclosure of the contract terms. Passage of this take over would represent just another example oft this administration's contempt for the douglas frye 1200 6 somerset way sdfrye001@indy.rr.co independence and self direction of it's citizens. from what i have read the discount price offered is for only one year, what guarantees are there that it will not increase during the contract time that we are locked into. we are very happy with Rays and find less trash floating around the neighborhood after their pick up compared to days that Republic picks up with its automatic claw that dumps at the Sara Frye 12006 Somerset Wa■ sfrye002 @indy.rr.con top of the truck. Charles Hook 750 N Rangeline Rd travelguidel @indy.rr .cam this would be a great addition to the North Rangeline Road recycle center which we use several times a week and would allow my 12 yr old to be more "involved" with recycling in Ross Springer 10618 106th Place, Carmel, IN 46033 rossrosiespringer@ msn.com This must be both city -wide curb side trash and recycling services. One giant green step for mankind. Winston Long 12316 Brookshire Pkwy winston@omniprodu ctions.com Thanks for the opportunity to save us all some money on a much needed service. I know there may be a very small group of citizens who may not use recycling and /or conventional trash pickup services, but the vast majority of Carmel utilizes one of the trash companies at a greater expense than can be realized through the City wide purchasing leverage. I do not consider it to be a tax as it is a service we need and are presently paying for.each quarter. I applaud the City in its effort to save its citizens money! Thanks Josh Bressers 22 Albert Ct. josh @bress.net This is a good idea for the city. It will certainly reduce overall emissions from the trucks, and will help prevent having a different garbage truck drive down the street every day. Cecil and Susan Salter 12856 Limberlost Dr sbf5salter @att.net There are so many positive aspects to having a city -wide trash pick -up, I cannot imagine anyone voting against it. Besides all the important reasons listed, just think how nice to have trash cans out on the street only one day a week, vs several days to accomodate all the different companies schedules! This one is a no- brainer. Kevin Heber 557 Village Drive kevin @hebers.net Get with the program, Carmel! Lisa L. Also, it would be better to have just one trash day instead of trash cans sitting out every day. Ashley Williams 2000 Rhettsbury St., Carmel, IN 46032 ashmar117 @gmail.c om I would love to have curbside recycling! I currently have. to drive my recycling to a drop -off site, which is really inconvenient! I hope you have cardboard recycing as well. RTTRCHn'7e r (3) Rae Hopkins 14528 Saddleback Drive raeshop @att.net We had free curbside recycling 25 years ago in California and think Indiana is way behind in providing recycling! Kathy Smart 12060 Somerset Way East asmart6 @att.net The question above asked for curbside recycling, however my understanding is the proposed cost covers trash and recyling. Is this correct/ Layla Spanenberg 931 Twelve Oaks Ipanenberg @indy.rr .com I just received my Republic bill for 3 months of service, trash and recycling. Passage of this take over would represent just another example oft this administration's contempt for the douglas frye 1200 6 somerset way sdfrye001 @indy.rr.cc independence and self direction of it's citizens. from what i have read the discount price offered is for only one year, what guarantees are there that it will not increase during the contract time that we are locked into. we are very happy with Rays and find less trash floating around the neighborhood after their pick up compared to days that Republic picks up with its automatic claw that dumps at the Sara Frye 12006 Somerset Wal sfrye002 @indy.rr.con,top of the truck. Excerpt of NO VOTES from March 6 and March 7, 2011, 2 p.m. A-?7 Cfm1 ENT I (6) WATERFORD HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION POSITION STATEMENT The undersigned residents of Waterford subdivision are, by their signatures on this statement, expressing their objection to the proposed municipal ordnance seeking to establish a city -wide single provider trash collection contract. Our neighborhood has had excellent, inexpensive service without the involvement of the City, and sees no advantage to the proposed change in service. The proposed ordnance would raise our monthly cost by nearly 50 reduce the amount of items which would be collected, and assess a separate charge for collection of larger items, which are currently collected without charge in our neighborhood. In essence, we are confronted with the loss of local control of our service, higher cost per household, imposed limits upon the amount of trash containers, and separate charges for pick -up of larger items. None of these changes are beneficial to our neighborhood. Clearly, this proposal is simply an effort of the City to involve itself in provision of a service which is currently being performed in an excellent fashion without the City oversight. We strongly urge the Utilities Sub Committee and the City Council membership to reject the pending ordnance.
