Subject: RE: Possible Plan Review Items Angie, Attached is a clarification drawing for the Carmel High School project for your review. The location of the new entry is the south elevation of the existing High School, facing the drop off circle and Main Street further to the south. I have updated the drawing to include a dimensioned plan, elevation with materials indicated, site plan and a few elevations of the existing building. Also included in the elevation is a proposed signage size and description, though we have not yet narrowed down the final text I would not expect it to exceed 20 letters or 10 -12" in height, the letters would most likely be aluminum cast letters similar to the existing lettering on the building. The design intention is to direct visitors through the new secured entry. Please review at your convenience, if you need anything further do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. Thanks! -Angie Conn, Planning Administrator From: Andy Miller [mailto:amiller ©fhai.com] Sent: Wednesday, April 20, 2011 1:05 PM To: Holmes, Christine B Cc: William Payne Subject: Possible Plan Review Items Good Afternoon Christine, I am working through some preliminary design items with Carmel High School and Bill Payne from our office asked that I forward a few questions on to you concerning possible plan review items. We have reviewed some security related issues with Carmel High School and one of their wishes, from a security standpoint, is to rework how the public and parents enter the High School building. Currently a visitor comes through the main entry and signs in at a student manned desk and is directed to the appropriate destination. In today's world they are very concerned that this could possibly put students in harm's way. The proposed solution is to filter visitors through a new vestibule that would be added to the south elevation of the building. This would force visitors to be allowed to enter the building, past the appropriate personnel and then be directed to their destination. The addition of a secured vestibule and the re- working of the existing office is not really the concern. When we take a step beyond what is required for security measures, now we have an obscure entry with visitors wandering around attempting to enter the building at entries that will be locked down. We are proposing that a new canopy be constructed that is similar in construction to the main entry canopy that would easily direct visitors to the new access point. Please see the attached for a preliminary design of the secure entry canopy we are interested in is on the right side of the paper, Entry "A The construction would be brick piers, steel structure and a curved metal roof to match the adjacent canopy. We also discussed the issue of signage, once again to identify how a visitor can enter the building. This could be possibly be "ADMINISTRATION as indicated on the drawing or "CARMEL HIGH SCHOOL MAIN ENTRY "...at what point does this identification then warrant a review? My inquiry breaks down into a couple questions... 1. If the owner decides that an entry canopy is needed, would this need review and approval? 2. If the owner would like to pursue signage would this need review and approval? 3. If review is not required on the canopy but on the signage is required, could we proceed with the canopy and then submit the signage at a later date? Thank you so much for taking time to look at this important issue. I want to correctly inform the owner of the process before we get too far along. Feel free to contact me by phone or email if you have further questions. 2 Andy Miller, AIA, CDT, LEED AP BD +C Project Architect /Associate Fanningâ– Howey T: (317) 848.0966 F: (317) 848.0843 E -mail: amillergfhai. com Fanning /Howey Associates, Inc. intends to send this transmission (including any attachments) only to the designated individual or entity.
