Contaminated ground gets steamy cleansing
By Phil Dunlap

A combination of diggers,
burners, conveyors and steam --
lots of steam -- is cleaning up

degrees Fahrenheit. The thermal
treatment unit (heats the soil) to
anywhere from 200 to 600 degrees Fahrenheit," said Gregg Romaine,
director of brownfield services for SESCO, an environmental service
company.
The land, at 10424 N. College Ave., next to the former O'Malia's
grocery, had been under a strip center that burned down in the early 1980s.
The Village Cleaners was at the location at the time it was destroyed by
fire. Left behind in the soil was perchloroethylene, or PCE, a chemical
commonly used in dry cleaning operations.
The soil impurities from the College Avenue location are eliminated by
the on -site plant that takes contaminated soil in at one end of the unit and
sends it out the other end, clean and sterile.
The high heat of the process is claimed to eliminate the contamination.
"For two or three times the cost, we could have hauled it to a hazardous
waste facility in Michigan. But that becomes extraordinarily expensive,"
said Romaine.
The cost to clean this site has been estimated at $600,000. According to
Romaine, O'Malia Investment Co. and its insurance carrier are picking up

"This is really a win -win. It's going to clean up that site. Nobody is
going to be harmed from the process," said Romaine.

"Right now the soil coming out is at 418 degrees. We quench it with

Contamination levels were lower at City Center and not as harmful,
Romaine said, so that soil could be sent through a treatment system at a
landfill.
"Levels at (the Home Place) location are high enough that it made
(hauling it away) cost prohibitive," he said.
Chartier expects to be at the site in Home Place for about one month,
weather permitting.

Fred Glaser from Engineering took pictures of this one. Batch plant for asphalt at 104th & College. He was wondering if
this is in preparation for the work at 106th & College.
