The thermal treatment unit (heats the soil) to anywhere from 200 to 600 degrees Fahrenheit," said Gregg Romaine, director of brownfield services for SESCO, an environmental service company. The land, at 10424 N. College Ave., next to the former O'Malia's grocery, had been under a strip center that burned down in the early 1980s. The Village Cleaners was at the location at the time it was destroyed by fire. Left behind in the soil was perchloroethylene, or PCE, a chemical commonly used in dry cleaning operations. The soil impurities from the College Avenue location are eliminated by the on -site plant that takes contaminated soil in at one end of the unit and sends it out the other end, clean and sterile. The high heat of the process is claimed to eliminate the contamination. "For two or three times the cost, we could have hauled it to a hazardous waste facility in Michigan. But that becomes extraordinarily expensive," said Romaine. The cost to clean this site has been estimated at $600,000.
