History and Distribution
Oxeye daisy was introduced to the United States from Europe as it contamir
seed and as an ornamental. It quickly escaped cultivation and has since be(
common weed. Common names include white daisy, field daisy, marguerite
poorland flower and moon -penny.
Besides being planted for its beauty, oxeye daisy was cultivated for home re
to cure whooping cough, asthma and other coughs. A tea made from its lea,
sometimes used as an antispasmodic. Today many people enjoy the young
of oxeye daisy in salads. Oxeye daisy is widely distributed across the Britisl-
and in Europe. It is found in most states, but is less common in the southerr
States. It is common in the northeast and the Great Plains and is the most p
roadside weed in the Pacific Northwest. In the western states, it is considere
noxious Washington, Wyoming, and Montana.
In Montana, Lewis and Clark County was the first to report oxeye daisy in the
1890. Since then, the number of counties reporting oxeye daisy has increas
continues to increase.
Oxeye daisy prefers upland pastures and meadows, but also grows along ro
abandoned croplands and waste areas in western and south-central Montan
spread in pastures is exacerbated because most large herbivores avoid it ar
instead on grasses. The ungrazed oxeye daisy is then free to propagate wh
grasses are held in check by grazing
Impacts
The greatest impact of oxeye daisy is on forage production of infested pastui
meadows. Cattle avoid oxeye daisy and therefore any pasture infested with
stands of oxeye daisy will decrease forage available for grazing. Dense star
oxeye daisy can decrease plant diversity and increase the amount of bare s<
area. The full extent of ecological, environmental, economical and sociologic
impacts from oxeye daisy are not well documented.
Management
Because oxeye daisy is such a .showy, pretty plant, proper management is r
neglected. It is often ingredient in wildflower seed mixes so consumers shop
the label carefully to be sure oxeye daisy is not present. In addition, landowi
often avoid mowing the plant because it looks so pretty in their lawn in their c
Therefore, education and awareness are critical for adequate management.
Mechanical
Oxeye daisy should be mowed as soon as flowers appear to reduce seed
production. Mowing may have to be repeated during a long growing season
because mowing may stimulate shoot production and subsequent flowering.
systems are shallow and the plant can be duo, up and removed. Be sure to
the entire root system, though, as remaining roots may produce new shoots.

removal will have to be continued for several years because seeds may rem

not recommend this treatment for long term control. Transline is also labelec

plants are young and actively growing.
Because oxeye daisy is not a superior competitor for nutrients, some researc
believe fertilizer applied in combination with herbicide will enhance grass yie

fertilizer applied at eighty pounds per acre (with no herbicide) was the most (

No biological controls have been discovered for oxeye daisy.

Oxeye daisy has become an aggressive invader of pastures, meadows and

Identifying Noxious Weeds of Ohio
Bulletin 866-98
Oxeye Daisy
(Leucanthemum vulgare - formerly classified as Chrysanthemum
leucanthemum var. pinnatifidum)
Habitat: meadows, roadsides, old pastures and areas low in fertility
Life cycle: perennial; spreads by rhizomes and seeds
Growth Habit: erect, 1-3 feet high
Leaves: 1-3 inches long; alternate, dark green, simple, lobed - especially the larger basal leaves. Basal
leaves have large petioles.
Stem: smooth; may or may not be branched
Inflorescence: June - August. Typical daisy -like flowers with white outer petals and yellow centers
which are depressed in the center. Flowers are 1-2 inches in diameter and solitary on the stem.
Root: rapidly spreading root system
Similar plants: Oxeye daisy may resemble some species of asters. However, asters typically have
unlobed leaves. Fleabanes have similar flowers that are much smaller than oxeye daisy and occur in
clusters.
The problem is.... oxeye daisy can establish itself quickly in uncultivated areas. Its early blooming habit
and rapid seed maturation allow it to become established early in the season. Seeds may mature even if
flower stalks are mowed or cut down. Oxeye daisy is often included in wildflower seed mixtures. Avoid
these mixtures; this aggressive weed will quickly out -compete more desirable wildflower species.
