Introduction
This course develops basic skills in analysis of industry and market structure, employment of game theory
in the construction of competitive strategy, and determination of optimal prices for the sale of goods and
services. Specific topics include oligopoly, antitrust regulation, price discrimination, product bundling,
and advanced pricing arrangements. Students will gain advanced knowledge of how to use prices and
market position to maintain an advantage over competitors that maximizes profits.
o Class Materials
G511 places a heavy emphasis on both traditional textbook material and the Harvard case method.
Typically, the first half of each class focuses on the former while the second half budgets time for the
latter. The managerial economics textbook used for G511 is a best seller in the MBA market and is
written by an internationally respected colleague in the business economics department at Kelley. The
book is:
Baye, Michael R. Managerial Economics and Business Strategy, 5th edition, McGraw -Hill Irwin, ISBN
0 -07- 298389 -2, 2006.
Students can purchase this book from the IUPUI bookstore at the student center (southwest corner of
University Michigan) or Indy's College Bookstore (601 West 11th St., 317 -631 -2665) just off campus.
In addition to the textbook, students should purchase directly from Harvard the G511 coursepack. Go to
the following website at Harvard Business School Publishing to complete the purchase transaction:
http:/ Iharvardbusinessonline. hba. harvard.edu /reiay.jhtml7name =cp &c= c63288 1# 3q S D
Course Reference ID: c63288
With the purchase, a student can directly download cases or have a hard copy delivered to a given
address. To order from Harvard, a student must register with the website. Once this is complete, the
website may ask for the course Reference ID which is c63288. The course extensively uses Excel
(Microsoft's spreadsheet software package) to process and analyze relevant economic and financial data.
Students should have access to a recent version of Excel and possess basic literacy in how to manipulate a
spreadsheet.
Pedagoy
The course is designed around one goal application of the material to real world management decision
making. The first half of each class evening is a lecture that presents textbook material via problems that
characterize challenges encountered in everyday market environments. The subject matter is structured to
