HomeMy WebLinkAboutDept Report 09-06-11 CARMEL PLAN COMMISSION SUBDIVISION COMMITTEE DEPARTMENT REPORT SEPTEMBER 6, 2011 4. Docket No. 11080010 ADLS Amend: Circle K/Shell (College Ave.) Signage The applicant seeks approval to place two new wall signs and one new ground sign on the property. The site is located at 10598 College Ave. and is zoned B -1. It is located within the Home Place Business District Overlay Zone. Filed by Ben DeHayes of Corporate ID Solutions on behalf of the owner. The applicant seeks approval to install a new ground sign and two new wall signs. Variances were recently granted at the August 22 BZA meeting for ground sign height, number of signs, number of signs facing east and 100% logo sign. The ground sign is 36 sq. ft. and 7 -ft tall.. It will have a white background with the red and yellow Shell logo, red and white Circle K logo and a pricing sign for regular fuel. The regular fuel letters will be red, as is the industry standard. There is also a panel on the sign for the name of the shopping center: College Crossing. The name is in silver letters and is currently very small and will be hard to see. The Department would like for these letters to be larger (within the 18- inch proposed panel) and be more legible. The base is silver and will allow for new flowers and shrubbery to be planted at the sign base to improve the look of the sign. The sign will be internally illuminated. The gas canopy will be changed from the existing yellow and red Crystal Flash motif to the traditional Shell branding of white, yellow and red. The canopy will be illuminated by the red band. Please see your packet for more details on this element. The two wall signs are 100% logo signs for Circle K. One is centered over the entrance to the convenience store and one is positioned to the east. Each is 14.7 sq. ft. in area. Also proposed are the Circle K stripes on either side of the logo wall sign:i Although the racing stripes were reduced in height to match the new logo wall sign size, the Department is still NOT in favor of these racing stripes. Staff b "elieves that they add sign clutter and take away from the building's appearance. Currently the fascia is green. The Depai l,uent thinks a better alternative is to keep the fascia green or paint it to be a solid white color. Please view the petitioner's informational packet for further detail. Recommendation: After all comments /concerns are addressed, the Dept of Community Services (DOCS) recommends positive consideration of Docket No. 11080010 ADLS Amend. 4
