As I approached the store I couldn't help but notice the "yellow wall" of posts along the front of the store. A total of eleven yellow posts are located across the front of the store near the curb. When I entered the Office Depot store, I approached the store manager and inquired about the large number of yellow posts across the store and when they were installed. He immediately asked me "if I was a City of Carmel Councilman". I said "I was not a City Councilman"! He said "a Carmel City Councilman had previously asked him why there were eleven posts along the front of the store." His reply to me asking the same question was that "it was Office Depot corporate policy to install the eleven posts along the front of the store". My personal observation was that there is not any store or business in Carmel with a large quantity of security posts along the front of their building. In my opinion, if all businesses in Carmel were allowed to install a large quantity of yellow posts along the front of their business like Office Depot has done, the City of Carmel would be known as "yellow post city"! Since it was "Office Depot corporate policy", I decided to investigate what other Office Depot stores in the area have done with posts along the front of their stores. I also wanted to see what other office supply stores and businesses in the area have done in the way of entrance security posts. I have enclosed copies of photographs of office supply stores in this area. You will note that there are two area Office Depot stores that have no posts along the front entrance of each store. The enclosed photos show that most stores, that have installed security posts along the front of their store entrance, have a maximum of four posts. Most are made from concrete and not very obvious to a passerby. This is true also for all of the Best Buy stores in the area. I have talked to Lisa in your office about a month ago asking when Carmel approved the eleven yellow posts at the Office Depot store on North Meridian. As of this date, I have not received any response. In my opinion, as a resident of Carmel, the City should have Office Depot remove all but four of the posts along the front of their store. The remaining four posts should be redone as plain concrete or painted in a neutral color. I would appreciate it if someone in your department would review this issue and respond to me what the Department of Community Services has found on file approving (or not approving) the eleven yellow posts in the front of the Office Depot store located in Carmel.
