E~XPLANATION
Ed Martin is the owner of a parcel of real estate located at the northwest comer of
Marie Drive and 96th Street. This site is currently the home of the Ed Martin Acura
dealership, and the common address is 3800 East 96th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46240.
The subject real estate is presently zoned B-3 (Business District). and the building
considered a single tenant office building under the Cannel/Clay Zoning Ordinance. is
The Ed Martin Acura dealership previously contained Pontiac, GMC and Acura
vehicles for sale. However, Ed Martin has transferred the Pontiac and GMC aspects of
the dealership to its store located on Michigan Road, making the 96th Street dealership an
exclusively Acura dealership. In order to make this conversion, Acura requires that Ed
Martin undertake an exterior renovation in order to participate in its "Acura Image
Program", which encourages consistency in appearance of Acura dealerships across the
nation. A sample photograph of an Acura Image Program participant is included as
Exhibit 4 in the informational brochure. The Special Studies Committee of the Plan
Commission unanimously approved the architectural design, lighting, signage
appearance, and style of the exterior renovation on October 5, 2004.
Since the Ed Martin Acura dealership building occupies frontage along both
Marie Drive and 96th Street, it is permitted under the Ordinance one wall or ground sign
per frontage pursuant to Section 25.07.02-08(b) of the Ordinance. A ground sign already
exists on the Marie Drive frontage, which will be maintained and retrofitted to blend in
with the exterior renovation. The wall identification sign permitted under the Ordinance
on the 96th Street frontage is the Acura icon, a rendering of which is shown as Exhibit 6
in the informational brochure. Ed Martin is requesting a second wall identification sign
on the 96th Street frontage which identifies the Ed Martin name. As a result, Ed Martin is
requesting a variance from Section 25.07.02-08(b) of the Ordinance to permit an
additional wall sign on the elevation facing 96th Street. A rendering of the proposed Ed
Martin wall identification sign is shown as Exhibit 7 in the informational brochure, and it
received ADLS approval on October 5, 2004.
The variance requested is necessary to facilitate the general public's location of
the Ed Martin dealership, and it is consistent with several other dealerships along the 96th
Street Corridor. We look forward to presenting the variance request to the Board of
Zoning Appeals Heating Officer at the meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on November 22,
2004.
