Subject: SM&P Sign
Angie & Jon,
Regarding the lighting of the logo, I was under the (apparently mistaken) impression that the logo was an
internally illuminated box, thus it would be readable. I was incorrect. As submitted, it would be halo illuminated like
the letters and thus unreadable at night. The sign company had originally proposed that the letters and the logo
be internally illuminated with the letters being black during the day and white at night. This would allow for a
readable logo at night. But, since the Adesa sign already existed on the building with halo effect illumination, they
were told that the SM&P sign needed to be halo effect as well. If the logo is done this way as well, then it will be
unreadable at night as your staff comment suggests and probably will not look "right" (in my opinion). A strictly
internally illuminated logo might well overpower the letters, illumination wise, as well. Thus, I have asked the sign
company to come up with a middle of the road proposal that would allow for readability of the logo at night and not
be over-powering illumination wise. Below is what they have suggested:
Option for lightin~ lo~o:
The side walls of the logo are to be manufactured from aluminum primed and finished
black. The front face of the letter is be fabricated from white acrylic and have a
translucent digital print of the logo on the front side. The reverse side of the
letter will have clear acrylic. This will allow the letter to be illuminated from
the from front and backside at the same time.
Apparently, this same approach was used on the Midwest Sleep Institute sign at the SWC of 116th and US 31.
I'm going to drive by this sign on my way home tonight to see what it looks like. Please let me know what you
think of this alternative being submitted tonight.
Thanks,
Steve

Jon & Angie,
I'm getting ready to file for a wall sign on HC #6. Adesa has a sign on the east fagade. This will be the second
sign. We also need a variance to move the permitted west fa(;ade sign to the east fa~;ade. The sign will be the
same color and lighting as Adesa's sign, except for a small logo (15%) between the second and third letters - SM
(Iogo)P. The logo is a boxed "&" with a gradient amber color from bottom to top.
I hope that you will schedule this straight to the Special Studies Committee on Decem~' 7th and before the BZA
Hearing Officer on Dec. 13th.
Please advise if you see any problems with this.
Thanks,
Steve
