A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL,
INDIANA, TO SUPPORT THE HOOSIER RAILS TO TRAILS COUNCIL'S
PROPOSAL OF THE UNITED STATES BICYCLE ROUTE #35
WHEREAS, the bicycle is a viable and environmentally sound form of
transportation and an excellent form of recreation; and
WHEREAS, the Monon Greenway attracts hundreds of thousands of bicyclists
each year, providing economic, health, and environmental benefits to its users; and
WHEREAS, bicycle tourism is a growing industry in North America,
contributing $47 billion a year to the economies of communities that provide facilities for
such tourists; and
WHEREAS, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation
Officials (AASHTO) has designated a corridor crossing the length of Indiana from
Michigan to Kentucky, and vice versa, to be developed as United. State Bike Route #35
(USBR #35), and
WHEREAS, the Hoosier Rails to Trails Council, Bicycle Indiana, with local
communities and cyclists, and the Adventure Cycling Association, with the cooperation
of the Indiana Department of Transportation and other stakeholders, have proposed a
specific route to be designated as USBR #35, a map of which is herein incorporated into
this resolution by reference, and
WHEREAS, the proposed route for USBR #35 travels through the City of
Carmel, Indiana, and can therefore provide a benefit to our residents and businesses, and
WHEREAS, we have investigated the proposed route and found it to be a
suitable route, and desire that the route be designated so that it can be mapped and signed,
thereby promoting bicycle tourism in our area,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of the City
of Carmel, Indiana, that the City of Carmel hereby expresses its approval and support for
the development of USBR #35, and requests that the appropriate officials see to it that the
route is officially designated by AASHOTO as soon as that can be achieved, and
authorizes the posting of signs within the City of Carmel, identifying the route through
the community once that official designation has been made.
PASSED by the Common Council of the City of Cannel, Indiana this as day of
2012, by a vote of '7 ayes and b nays.
