Tree Care Seminar Synopsis
Tree Risk Assessment (Paul Pinco) discussion on the defects and conditions which
increase risk of failure in trees and the process by which to determine failure potential and
appropriate maintenance of trees in the urban setting.
Tree Pruning Response (Lindsey Purcell) understanding the physical and biological
responses of trees to pruning and demonstrate the importance of proper pruning techniques
and timing.
Ordinances, Permits and Violations (Julie Holtsclaw) discussion on the contents of
Chapter 701 of the Municipal Code of the City of Indianapolis regulating the planting and
maintenance of trees within the city. Understand the responsibilities and requirements for
maintaining trees on private and public property and the consequences of violating those
requirements.
New Construction Standards in Indianapolis (Andrew Mertz and Pamela Griesemer)
updates on the recently adopted standard of procedure developed to maximize best
management practices for construction effecting rblic trees within the City of Indianapolis.

Invasive Plants Management and Control (Brenda Howard) infoimadon on the
management of tree and shrub species recognized as invasive exotics as well as
several common landscape species with management issues which are yet to be
classified as invasive. She will also introduce the new Cooperative Weed Management

Tree Pests Identification and Control (Cliff Sadof) information on the identification
characteristics of diseases, insects and other biotic /abiotic tree pests common in Indiana as
well as the appropriate measures, methods and best management practices for their control.
Tree Planting (KIB) staff will discuss how to choose appropriate tree species based on
siie conditions, the pros and cons of varic:us ::Fining stock, and proper plantR g techniques
and after care. KIB will also demonstrate a n ew preparation technique for managing root
bound container stock called, 'Boxing'.
Trees and Construction (Lindsey Purcell) information on damaging construction
practices and their effects on trees as weli as techniques for tree preservation and
mitigation.
