SECTION 04 21 14 - THIN BRICK VENEER
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. Section includes thin brick veneer for interior application over rigid backer board.
B. Related Requirements:
1. Division 05, Section 05 40 00 “Cold Formed Metal Framing” for load bearing support of
thin brick veneer system.
2. Division 07, Section 07 92 00 “Joint Sealants.”
3. Division 09, Section 09 28 13 “Cementitious Backing Board” for brick veneer substrate.
1.3 DEFINITIONS

A. Pre-installation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site.
1.5 ACTION SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: For each type of product.
1. Include construction details, material descriptions, dimensions of individual components
and profiles, and finishes for brick veneer systems.
B. Shop Drawings:
1. Include plans, elevations, sections, and mounting and attachment details.
C. Samples: For each exposed product and for each color and texture specified.
D. Samples for Initial Selection: For each type of unit.
E. Samples for Verification: For each type of unit.

A. Qualification Data: For Installer and Manufacturer.
B. Material Test Reports: For each material, by a qualified testing agency.
1. Applies to materials not covered in Product Test Reports, but are construction assembly
system covered by this specification section.
C. Product Test Reports: For each product, for tests performed by manufacturer and witnessed by
a qualified testing agency.
D. Field quality-control reports.
1.7 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Manufacturer Qualifications:
1. Refer to Specification Section 01 40 00 “Quality Requirements.”
B. Installer Qualifications:
1. Refer to Specification Section 01 40 00 “Quality Requirements.”
C. Mockups: Build mockups, if requested by Architect, to verify selections made under Sample
submittals, to demonstrate aesthetic effects, to set quality standards for materials and execution
and to set quality standards for fabrication and installation.
1. Build mockup of typical wall panel as shown on Drawings.
2. Approval of mockups does not constitute approval of deviations from the Contract
Documents contained in mockups unless Architect specifically approves such deviations
in writing.
3. Object to compliance with requirements, approved mockups may become part of the
completed Work if undisturbed at time of Substantial Completion.
1.8 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Deliver products of this section on pallets, with individual faces protected; keep dry.
B. Store units in protected area or under cover on ground level; keep dry.
C. Do not double stack pallets.
1.9 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Environmental Requirements:
1. Maintain ambient temperatures within range recommended by manufacturer, but not less
than 70 deg F or more than 95 deg F during the following time periods:
a. 48 hours prior to installation.
b. During installation.
c. 48 hours after installation.

1.10 WARRANTY
A. Manufacturer's Special Warranty: Manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components of thin
brick veneer system that fail(s) in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A. Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide the following:
1. Thin Brick Series – ½ inch Modular.
B. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products by the following:
1. Glen - Gery Brick.
2.2 MATERIALS
A. Thin Brick Veneer: ASTM C 1088.
1. Standard Modular: ½ inch x 2-1/4 inch x 7-5/8 inch.
2. Type: TBS.
3. Color: Refer to Finish Legend on Drawings.
B. Adhesive: Refer to manufacturer’s written recommendations.
C. Mortar: Refer to manufacturer’s written recommendations and to Finish Legend on Drawings.
D. Joint Sealants: Refer to Specification Section 07 92 00 “Joint Sealants.”
E. Fasteners: Coated nails staples pr screws of type and for spacing as recommended by thin
brick veneer manufacturer for loads encountered.
F. Cleaner: Non-acid cleaner as recommended by thin brick veneer manufacturer.
G. Substrate: For framed or furred construction, provide cementitious backer board.
1. Refer to Specification Section 09 28 13.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine substrates areas and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with
requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of the Work.
B. Examine thin brick veneer units before installation. Reject any units that are wet, moisture
damaged, or mold damaged.

C. Prepare written report, endorsed by Installer, listing conditions detrimental to performance.
D. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Thin Brick:
1. Apply adhesive to back of each thin brick unit.
2. Place thin brick units in position level, with 3/8 inch joint spa, plumb with surrounding
units. Apply unit with firm pressure.
B. Joints:
1. General: Allow adhesive to set and cure in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions
for thin brick veneer units.
2. Install mortar to thin brick veneer joints using a tuck pointing tool, metal tipped mortar bag
or grout setting machine in accordance with manufacturer’s written instructions.
a. Fill joints completely with mortar.
b. Remove excess mortar. Do not allow mortar to dry on the face of the units.
c. Tool exposed joints slightly concave when thumbprint hard, using a jointer larger
than joint thickness, unless otherwise indicated.
d. Clean and finish joints in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
3. Control Joints: Size in accordance with Specification Section 07 92 00 “Joint Sealants” for
sealant performance, but in no case larger than adjacent mortar joints in exposed thin
brick veneer units.
4. Expansion Joints: Provide where indicated on Drawings or as recommended by system
manufacturer.
3.3 PROTECTION
A. Cleaning:
1. Remove excess mortar and smears using brush or steel wool.
2. Replace defective mortar. Match adjacent work.
3. Clean soiled surfaces with non-acidic solution, acceptable to thin brick veneer
manufacturer, which will not harm masonry or adjacent materials.
4. Leave surfaces thoroughly clean and free of mortar and other soiling.
5. Use non-metallic tools in cleaning operations.
B. Remove and replace thin brick veneer units that are wet or damaged.
